I'm starting a blog to build a list in my niche. And I've been told its a good idea to get a domain with the keywords your going after. But here's my dilemma. All of the "good" domains are taken. However, I can buy domains that look like this:

MYDOMAINNAME.info

or

MY-DOMAIN-NAME.com

I don't like .info or the hyphens. But I'd love to rank well with Google. Should I buy one of these? If so, which one? Or would it be better to get a ".com" with a worse keyword?

First of all, .info is a notorious TLD extension for spam activities.

There is no beating around the bush on that one.

People just abused that extension because it's SO CHEAP to register.

As for hyphens, put yourself in the shoes of your customers.

Would you remember your domain with all its hyphens?

    Thankfully, there are easier solutions.

Come up with nonsense names that you can brand that have the EMOTIONAL 'ring' of your niche.

I learned how to do this recently for a new project of mine.

I have jut started building a couple of websites. I am just getting my feet wet so i cold not really tell you if the .info is really a good or bad thing. But i went with the key words i wanted and added the .info.

    MYKEYWORDS.INFO

I did this for a couple of my sites. They are cheaper to purchase. I one of my sites i am getting 50 to 100 comments a day. I cannot tell you yet if this s a good sign because i have only had this site up for about 4 months. I have had a few clicks to the products i have reviewed on this site. I am sorry i cannot tell you more information but this is my experience with .info.

you could also use exact keyword + another term, such as healthyfoodtips, healthyfoodrecipes, healthyfood ideas. You'll run into something decent with a .com sooner or later.

Pick something that is easy to remember. Google doesn't care so there is no SEO benefit...though I suppose some will claim otherwise.

      I don't either.

Time to put on your thinking cap, and come up with a brandible name.

Don't get too caught up with keywords in the domain. They don't pull nearly the weight they used to in SEO.

Having said that, take one of your keywords and head over here:

Get creative, and buy a [.com] domain.

If you plan on creating an authority blog and have researched your niche to determine that there is a market for your products/services... then, I would buy the dot com, net, and info 'extensions' for a min of 2 years...

This way, you can create the blog on the .com, a membership on the .net, and product information on the .info, and build a network.

Even if you just want the one domain... Make it a .com, as that is the top level domain you will want to build a blog on.

Have you tried putting a number in front of your keywords??

    BloggingSecrets.com would look like

    100BloggingSecrets.com OR

    101BloggingSecrets.com

You will definitely find some good domain names available with highly
    relevant keywords with this method.

I also do not like the .info or, any dash. In this case you can use alternative name. You can also use suffix or, prefix. But I like the .com domain in any cost or, any way. Thanks.

Always but always go with .com this is a must. Make a brand name for you that is connected with what you are doing and register .com domain you can easily add long term keywords later in the posts. People will connect more with you if you have a good sounding domain name as you appear more professional.

I don't have a problem with the "MY-DOMAIN-NAME" URL. As far as people "remembering" your domain name.... that's not importance. It's YOUR job to drive targeted traffic to your site everyday. That's the only reason they should remember your domain name. Not on some "brand recognition" type deal. Do direct marketing, and you can sell whatever product with a domain name like "REALLY-GREAT-PRODUCT" .com.

Top choice of professional marketers that I'm aware of is a keyword domain name with the dot com extension. Personally, I'd much rather have a name that givers surfers at least some idea of what my site is about. The com extension, particularly in the business world, still has a certain cache and respectability that the other extensions lack.

If your first choice is taken or is for sale at a price that you can't afford, check out thesaurus.com for some ideas. Nametumbler.com will also give you some hints.

All that being said, there are lot of new extensions that might appeal to you that are still available to combine with your choice of keywords. Uniregistry.com is a domain marketplace that is a leader in these new extensions. And Godaddy has many of these new extensions as well.

In regard to all the responses above, I do agree and disagree...
.com is more highly respected as a professional, and long lasting business (or so perceived)
than the other extensions, but that is not to lose the weight on the .net ext. It too has it's purpose. If you have an 'easily branded' website name, .net is a good option. If your website name is not easily remembered, the .com would be easier to find in a search. They both have their own pros and cons. And, yes, keywords are not what they used to be in site names. The content of your text in your site is much more 'ranking helpful' with the crawlers.

I prefer the .com domain name. It first gives an impression of your website and the content in it is meant for world wide use. Most people have come up with ways to exploit people by taking up domains and reselling them at a very good fee. You realize that most of these domains are active but not linked to any website. So the best thing you can do is to be able to find the domain you want and the owner to see if you can strike a good deal. If you find that being to expensive, they I prefer you select another domain and be on the look out to build enough traffic and mind you after a few months of good works you will be highly ranked.
