Product or membership site?

I was hoping to launch a bodybuilding related product in the form of a downloadable .zip folder comprised of videos and PDF written content etc. However a marketing agency recently told me that doing that will lead to other people re-uploading it (offering it free themselves and/or selling it) along with high refund rates.

He recommended making a more complicated membership site and/or with re-occurring charges.

Are there any solutions for selling it as a once-off payment downloadable product while keeping it secure... what would you do, thanks.

You can do this with a membership site. You can also protect your digital downloads with various software or payment platforms. i.e. JVZ will securely deliver your product after payment. You just upload the file when you set-up your product.

Over the years as a seller, I have found that memberships that charge a recurring monthly fee are the most profitable. Someone seeing a recurring monthly charge of $20 or whatever is much more likely to stay under the radar (like the cost of a pizza you don't think twice about) But its those large "multiple" hundred dollar charges that stick out like a sore thumb.

All of that plus offering a quality product you really can't lose in my opinion!

      Fitness Pro,

If you're just selling a "one payment and you're done" zip file with several products inside . . .

It would be easy to set up with a service like e-Junkie. They are secure and the cost is minimal ($5/month for up to 10 products).

      The best to you,

      Steve

You could test both out and see which makes more money. I read somewhere people stay on a members site for on average 3 months. So try pricing with that in mind. e.g $10pm or $30 one off. There is a lot you can do just split testing the price.

There's always the risk of theft when it comes to digital products. It's the nature of the business. Much like shoplifting in a grocery store. Or the risk of having a gun pointed to your face as a cashier at the gas station. I would just create the product, secure the download page with DLGuard, and go on with life stress free.

With either option you will always get people who will take the product and then seek a refund, as has already been said that is just a fact of life selling digital products.

One possible advantage of using a membership site is that you can drip feed the content so that the customer doesn't get access to everything all at once. Also if you continually add quality content to your membership they will hopefully stay with you much longer.

At least with digital products, unlike the shoplifting scenario previously mentioned, if someone takes your product it hasn't actually cost you anything so it's not worth worrying about too much.

The thing is, on the internet, you cannot be 100% sure no matter how much you spend for it. So like others have said, you can split test the two options and see which one profits you the most.

There will always be someone out there who will buy the product and want a refund after using it or even sell it to a third party for less.

Best thing is to put the product out there, watermark it so that even if it is resold, you still have the credit and make sales.

Creating and selling a product is about making money anyway. Don't waste time worrying.

    Put it out there!

    Good luck

I would recommend to do both!
Main front end product + membership site.

And don't worry too much about people stilling or sharing your product, it will be minority, and there's nothing much you can do about it.... Especially don't spend your time worrying about it while making your product...

Get some skin in the game.

Create a simple salespage, perhaps some
before and after pictures of your personal
results in a video format, and sell it.

People will buy if you are confident in
what you're selling and if you're precieved
    as an authority.

    This marketing agency is wrong.

A membership site doesn't have to
be complicated and people are going
to steal because that's the sin nature
of human beings. You can put measures
in place to discourage it, but you can't
    prevent it entirely.

Put up a makeshift page like I have in
your area of expertise, target forums in
    the bodybuilding/fitness niche and get
    to work.

That little page I created for free on weebly makes
me about $1000 a month in profit and
it only took 3hrs to put up.

    People respond to people.

There is a market for what you do.

If you yourself are getting the results
you want to sell, you won't have an
    issue selling it.

I highly recommend starting a youtube
account and giving away tips, advice
and making sort of a docu-story of your
life as a body builder and watch as people
are willing to pay you for coaching, services,
    products and the like.

I look at Mike Chang and Hodge Twins as
great examples who were just being real with
their target audience and Mike, if I remember
correctly, is a millionaire. Humble guy. Big
guy. And draws a lot of views because he is
passionate about what he does and even more
passionate to help others get the results.

It's not going to be perfect when you get going,
    just get it going.

Appreciate all the contributions to this thread, very knowledgeable people on here.
With better insight now I was thinking of selling the product initially and after a few months adding a membership element due to lack of funds and time at this moment.

Out of curiosity, regarding i.e. DLGuard mentioned above, does that just add a password to the content, but couldn't someone else just upload it (after they purchase it) and sell it elsewhere with that password? Only wondering is all thanks.

I think maybe offering a 90 Day Money Back Guarantee, but with the promise that when the 90 days are up I will send them some extras as a reward i.e. other fitness related downloads to lower refund rate and discourage acquisition from another website.. probably over thinking things though.

I wouldn't set up a membership site just to deliver a one-time product - too much overhead and in a few months when you really want to launch other features, you likely will have selected the wrong membership site software/system.

As others have said, Ejunkie, JVZoo each have secure download links (links with policies so that others can't download off of the same download link). Over the years there have been other content security products that "sign" products to keep others from accessing them - honestly, they matter less than they ever did...WHY?

Speed and personal touch is more important than ever in the digital products space.

Having sold hundreds of thousands of ebooks and digital products over the last decade I can tell you that the rate of theft or people re-selling your products in my experience is TINY...only 3-4 incidents in all of that time and most of these were people who were relatively harmless because they honestly didn't know what they were doing marketing wise anyway.

Go with a built-in secure download link and get on with launching your product - move fast, enhance your back-end, place branding in your PDF so that even if someone does steal it and send it out to others, they come back to you for more...

I would do both. As some mentioned above, front product, perhaps free, to capture people's emails, then upsell, charge mid XX and then promote your membership.

Remember that marketing (both, product and affiliate) has gone from transactional to relationship over the last few years. You will sell more in the long run if you gain your customers/fans' trust.

You have gold if you know how to use your content properly. The best marketing strategy with content like that is to "sell products." but drive visitors to your site and tell them they can have access to this free video or pdf if they sign up for your news letter. You have to think outside the box. Think inbound marketing. Your content is king and people crave that these days. Information entertainment will influence product sales. its not the size of your content that counts its how use it to your advantage.
