Default Salesletter? Or backdoor marketing?

Hey there! This is my first post at this amazing forum. I have been lurking around here for the past 8 months or so simply trying to grasp the concepts of internet marketing. I have recently finished the hardest classes my college has to offer and I am ready to at least try to do something with internet marketing.

I was planning on writing an eBook about poker, I have a certain methodology when it comes to playing that game as well as lots of various tips and tricks that you can use with online poker that does not apply when you play live. Call them hacks if you will (but every winning player online does this) I have this knowledge because I used to play a lot myself.

Now from what I understand there are two ways to go about offering this eBook to the internet community. First is having my website: wwwdot somethingsomethingdotcom go directly to a sales page with a sales letter and people can purchase the book directly like that, no tricks involved really. I can also have a blog going on that same sales letter website in order to increase its traffic through articles and social networking etc. The blog can also have an opt-in box where I build my list.

The other way I call backdoor marketing. Or maybe everyone calls it backdoor marketing, I don't remember how I got that term. This is where my main website: wwwdotsomethingsomethingdotcom leads to a squeeze page. Where the only purpose of that page is to try to get the customer's email address with the promise of a free video or free product or something. On the squeeze page all arrows point to the opt-in box with absolutely no mention of my product. After they give me their email address I send them the free video or whatever. In that email I also include a link to my blog. Then I spend the next couple of weeks updating my blog and sending my list (that will continue building) content. I will also mention that I have an amazing product coming up. At some point I do a product launch (my poker eBook) and this is where I get all my money, mainly from the list.

Is one way better than another? Honestly I would just like to make a quick buck. I want to see how far I can take this.

As far as internet marketing goes however I am very interested in two things: product launches and site flipping, I know these are two very different fields but I would like to master both.

What do you guys think? Salesletter or backdoor marketing? Is there anything I forgot? Thanks for your help!

Thanks for your reply! If I were to make a DVD however it would definitely be digital, no point in sending things out through the mail, I believe in automation over anything.
