So I'm guessing at least some would agree with me on my assessment of the typical marketer's personality type. Extroverted, bubbly, a bit fake, tendency to be a bit slippery and political. Massive rolodex, frequently power networking, heavy drinker, extensive use of buzzwords. (Maybe this is more stereotypical than typical.) (No over-generalization intended. My best friend studied marketing and she's nothing like this.) Anyway, how about internet marketers? How about successful internet marketers? What personality types do well in IM? |

I think what you're saying more closely matches a PR type than a marketer. It seems to me that IMers are actually slightly geeky technicians. To do it right you have to have a very calm temperament, a lot of patience to test, test, test tirelessly and then test some more. They have to be able to write sales copy of course, which connects with some of your ideas, but I think by and large they have more finesse than they get credit for and an uncanny ability to spot patterns in masses of information.

very interesting thoughts, peter. calm and patient. hmmm. can you give me an example of a time when you spotted a useful pattern in masses of information? something like "ah, my conversion rates seem to improve when I pause and smile in the first 10 seconds of my sales videos." or are you talking about big trends, or are you talking about more serious data mining? |

Internet marketers more introverted, marketers in the 9-5 world more extroverted.

It really depends. There are some lawyers who become internet marketers, some artists, really there are all types of personalities going into this one field. I would say though that a common characteristic is that they are all outgoing, whether it be in their research, their methods, or their networking. You have to have that element to really get things moving.

I think the traits an IM person needs are a strong desire to get ahead, the ability to learn, and the determination to stick with it.
