Default Do you have multiple domains selling the same thing?

I have a question for those of you who have been selling on line for a while.

Is it uncommon for people to have multiple sites, all selling the same e-book or e-course or whatever?

For instance if you had an ebook on how to make money with lawnmowing. You could have sites directed towards teens, college students, etc.

Or even just to get a better ranking by targeting keyword phrases? ie:

lawnmowingbusiness dot com
makemoneymowinglawns dot com

if so do you mention that you sell in on these other sites, what if they buy 1 from each site not knowing they are the same!
Any thoughts?

many people don't do this due to a lack of time....but it's a great idea.

Phew! Thats good lol I had already registered about 4 domains, and started writing the sales letter for two of them before I thought to ask!

I was dreading coming back here and someone telling me it was a bad idea!

Having said that, do you think it is just as effective to have a subdomain with your new keyword phrase?? Or is the whole actual domain better?

Thanks again for the responses

Yes - this is common with more advanced info product marketers who split their marketing across many sub-niches. I have 3 domains for one of my personal development products and two domains for one of my weight loss ebooks. Several in the IM space where I have courses, ebooks and membership sites in info product creation space.

It allows more specific targeting of sub-niches, better quality scores for landing pages (mainly an advantage for PPC, but also good for capturing affiliate traffic).

Perhaps it is a good idea if you want to rank your site on google with keywords, but I doubt there are many people who would do this. Although if you want to brand your business it does make sense owning all 3 .com .net and .co.uk

Great Idea - Specially if you have different marketing angles on the same product.

One may see your Internet marketing products that can deliver in the following:
- To make money
- To grow there own business
- To work from home.

The same product I am sure can help someone do all 3 from 3 sites.

I have to agree to Barry due to lack of time. It's good to have several domains for a product but creating several sales pages needs lots of time and money if you will outsource it.

Yes, several!

If a keyword is a good keyword then why not build a site and a few pages to support that keyword?

I have been doing this for years with a slightly different slant.

I create a generic site for the product then niche it down with different domains and just change the copy to suit. They are all buying the same product though.

Example:

I have a product called Mp3 Sound Stream which is streaming audio software and its main site is MP3 Sound Stream Software Streaming Audio made Easy

I sell the same software to musicians, churches, MLM, public speaking all on their own domains.

Eg: Christian Streaming Audio For Sermons and Music

it's a good idea if you want to dominate a niche, by using different keyword filled domains.

on a different angle, some people also do this to increase their clickbank gravity... as the more people selling a product the higher their grav will be. That's not hugely important, but dominating your niche with different SERPs is!

Good question. I am not sure whether having exactly the same content works on different sites works.
I tried it a couple of times promoting two properties I have for rent. I found that in both cases one website did much better than the other.

I put it down mainly to having got good matching keywords in the domain name. It also depends on the amount of competition for the keywords in your domain that you have chosen. When you are low down the ranking it seems hard to get your website placed higher.

Well, that is my experience, limited as it might be.

In my experience, I have found there are many ways to be right. It all comes back to testing & measuring what we do because what works for one person & their niche may not work for another.

Heya!

I tend to compete with myself all the time by having multiple websites selling the same thing in the same niche!

Yes just to be clear, I am not planning on writing ALL new copy for each site, but as quentin said you just tweak it a little. Your not really trying to sell to a totally diff group of people just with a slightly different angle.

The niche I am in is not very competitive but there are competitors, and I want the very first thing that BUYERS see when they search, is my site! So an extra few bucks a year and a little time tweaking the letter seems okay to me to get those extra sales!

Good to see all the replies!

I asked James Shramcko once for advice, and he said to me, "Build coke, then build Pepsi"

I guess he meant, be your own competitor. I mean, if you find a profitable niche, milk it from every angle!

It depends if the niche is profitable or not. If I find a niche I like, I will start building more sites advertising the same product. This way I can get enhances search rankings(by using the link power between each site) and also having multiple listings on the search engine.

I think targeting sub-niches in this way is good marketing. However, is it necessary to have unique content even if the sites are linked? I'm pretty sure the answer is yes, just thought I'd ask to be sure.

Yup..

I've found this to be one of my favourite niche strategies....

This way, you open both doors

I try to buy a few closely related domains each time I enter a new niche and then expand if/as and when required.

Peace
