Internet Marketing Advice from a Poker Player

Years ago, when I was playing poker for a living, a friend of mine wrote a book called "52 Tips for Texas Hold 'em Poker." I remember reading it and thinking it was just the basics, nothing new here.

Fast forward a few months when I went into a slump. I was winning less and losing more. Something changed, but I didn't know what. That's when I picked up my friend's book and started reading it again. Then, it hit me like a ton of bricks... I had forgotten the basics. My effort to develop a complex game got in the way of the very things that were helping me win.

Sometimes, in poker or in business or in life we start getting a little to complex for our own good. That's when it's time to go back to the basics. For Internet marketers, that would be leads, traffic, conversions.

If you are in a slump, stop over-complicating things. Get back to the basics.

Yep and in a way it is all sad as this relates to WF...
i.e Old time very successful and credible Warriors who occasionally come back here to remind us about these vital basics with really excellent posts only to get lambasted by Newbies who want to hear
"sexy " and other cynical Warriors who want to cry " same basic jargon for self promotion".

This is a continuing theme in the last 6 months or so here at WF ,and it's one reason why we have lost so many good long time Warriors ! They just choose not to comeback here and be mistreated

You've got to know when to hold 'em
    Know when to fold 'em
    Know when to walk away
    Know when to run
    You never count your money
When you're sittin' at the table
There'll be time enough for countin'
    When the dealin's done

Great advice and forgetting what was working in the beginning is a common problem for entrepreneurs.

Excellent advice Brian. I have found, both personally and observing others, that we all spend so much time looking for the IM silver bullet, or thinking the grass is greener on the other side, that we do get away from the basics.

The WF partly blame this forum for that :-) There are so many great Internet marketers here, and so many interesting ideas, it is hard not to lose focus sometimes.

A good trick to keep focused and still remain in the forum is to challenge yourself to only read posts that pertain to the methods and techniques you are trying to master.

          You got that right, Brian.

Sometimes you have to borrow an old set of blinders from a New York carriage horse. Big, thick leather thingies.

I do research and have to constantly slap my face to avoid tripping out over some sparkly piece of info that diverges from where I'm supposed to be going. So many mysterious nooks and crannies to explore. Utterly enchanting.... Smack!

Got caught in a measly rut, but the forum shook me out of it. When I first came back to wf, I was all over the place until I'd read enough to decide on a new path to follow. No more bouncing around from method to method.

Very true as I have learned the hard way.

You're in the way wrong place.

      It's so easy to do.

I'm working on a new project and I finally took a break for a few days to blast some birds. When I sat back down at my computer, I scrapped about 3/4 of the "mess" I had created.

I was building a battleship when all I really need is a dingy.

  • This is a good eye-opener. Those who have the habit of purchasing a course or starting off with a project then jumping off with a new course or project without finishing anything first can relate to this.

Most of the time, affiliate marketers do not succeed simply because they are spending more time in looking which course or which strategy is the best without realizing that the problem lies mostly on their state of mind. A lot of affiliate marketers have all the information and tools, but still they want more.

One thing I've learn lately is that you should stick to a project at a time.

Jumping from one project to another is a recipe for disaster, stick to one project or opportunity at a time, it maybe slow at first but once you have all your energies into it results will start showing up.

You are absolutely right. Jumping from one method to another only spreads your efforts thin. Concentrating on one method of business is the way to go, even if it does take time to gain momentum.
