Best way to advertise locally?

Hey guys, a friend of mine has two businesses locally here in NY, a plumbing service and supplies store and a new startup used auto sales and has asked me to help, I am a pc tech but not all that versed with marketing as I have only done Craigslist, Facebook and have my own site on the net. Problem is way too many different opinions and advice I am getting so I don't know who or what to believe.

I want to help my friend so I am looking into all aspects of marketing and would appreciate anyone's input/advice please? From what I am discovering most roads lead to either google or Facebook PPC, is this the route I should advise him to take and if so which one? Or is there something else he can try?

I'd say Google or Facebook.. I don't know of many other platforms that would give you enough traffic to reach people locally.

      Here are 2 ways.

For both you need to look up local keywords (KW's) such as plumber NYC and every related KW with New York spelled out, and every word associated with plumbing.

Method #1. Make valuable YT videos around each keyword and upload them to both his site and YT. The link of course sends them to his opt in page or sales letter.

Method #2. Create really valuable web content at 2,000 words or more per piece around keywords just like the videos. You can even embed the corresponding videos into the content pages.

      Promote them with social media.

      Patrick.

Facebook is ideal because you can target specifically people within the local area and Google is good because you can target search terms including the name of the town or city.

However, I would also recommend building up an email list and Twitter profile. Twitter can be used to search for people within your local area, which means you can reach out and interact with them. The email list can be used to increase sales after the initial purchase.

List your business on popular local directories

Getting clients and customers to find out where you are is crucial, and one of the best ways local businesses can be found online is by adding their company to top online business directories.

There are a number of popular online directories, including Google, Bing, Yahoo, LinkedIn, Yelp, Yellowbook and Foursquare. Make sure you place your details on all of them, because if you are only posting on these top few, then you will be missing an opportunity to be found by customers and clients who are after your services.

I personnally like to advertise locally on classified ads sites like Kijij and Craigslist. As far as pay per click is concern Facebook is my number one choice since I find it easier to target people on FB.

New York is a big state. Didn't see that it was NYC?

Replace NYC with "town you are in in NY" if you are not in the city. You will have better results if you are not on NYC. That is a tough cookie.

If he is offering actually plumbing services, make sure he gets on Angies list.

Both of the roads you mentioned are good starters.

Local craigslist will help too (and that is free and quick).

Find local directories you can get him listed in.

Determine a list of keywords for the google searches, then do those searches and see who the competition is.

These are 2 separate niches so each will likely require different attention.

Facebook ads can work wonder for local businesses. Try a few small trial runs ($1 a day or so) on different interests and see which audience demographic turns up the most successful results as far as reach, post engagement and CPC.

Definitely start with a mobile responsive website with copy that converts, and do SEO best practices along with some Adwords Express or normal Adwords, depending on the size of the ad budget.

    hi
    Social media absolutely
I would add other tips also the value that is created through the content and the shares offered to potential users. Online, for example, can write articles useful to those who read them, that solve problems or inform in an interesting way.
    * outside internet can arrange a meeting full of news for those who participate, giving useful gadgets and / or information.
    cheers

Whoa, a lot of info here, thanks everyone! I am having a problem understanding the use of Social Media for this purpose, way I see it something like craigslist and Angie's List would be better because when people go there they go searching for something specific or at least browse. With Facebook e.t.c this to me would be the opposite as you would be reaching out to people most of whom are not looking for your service or item, or am I wrong please?
