Quick question about keyword research

I was doing a little keyword research with a long tailed keyword and the number 1 and 2 positions in the serp were a couple links to some youtube video's. Is this a good thing or bad?

I mean would it be easy to get my site and blog ahead of these, or are they hard to beat out?

Thank-you,

Randal M

Yes, most likely you can outrank YouTube or even google sites if they are long tail. I was pleasantly surprised to do this myself just recently for the keywords Google Analytics Importer.

You can outrank Youtube videos for long tail if you optimize your site properly. I have a phrase that ranks #1 and my youtube video ranks #2...

They're not hard to beat out. Just get more backlinks than them

A lot of times with longtails, if you see something like a YouTube video or an EzineArticles article at the top, it's a good sign you can jump them. In many cases, they occupy those top spots purely as a result of the bump they get from being on an authority site with good PR.

I'd recommend getting a few good backlinks and seeing what happens. I wouldn't spend a ton of time on it, though, unless the keywords in question get enough searches to be worth your while.

According to keyword tracker there is 13,100 searches for this phrase each month. So If I can get ahead of the youtube video's it should be well worth the work?

Well, let's crunch some numbers. If the keyword in question gets 13,100 monthly searches, that's about 437 per day. I don't know how accurate it is, but I have seen on some authority sites that the #1 spot at Google accounts for roughly 40% of all clicks. So you'd be looking about approximately 175 daily visitors to your site. Or, 5,250 per month.

Yeah, I'd say it would be well worth it to conquer that keyword!

I have also seen people saying about 40% of the clicks go to #1 but I haven't seen proof of it yet.

I check my analytics logs and compare it to the EXACT search volume google predicts and I get anywhere from 2-6% of this.

If you use the google traffic estimator you will be able to see that google works out 0.5% of the search volume for places 1-3.

However, there is always extra traffic from keywords you didn't intent to rank on.

    Everyone,

Has already said it... There are ways to beat YouTube videos, but why not make a
youtube video for a different long tail keyword.

I put up a video for a highly competitive keyword pair and hit #1 position #1 in less than 4 days. And it stayed there for 2 days before starting to drop only because I haven't given it any juice yet.

If I see a YouTube video or an article directory listing in the first page for a keyword phrase, I'm always very confident that I can either outrank the result or get very close.

So take it as good news that you're seeing that YouTube video on page 1!
