Default Wikipedia Dummy

I have a client that would like me to create information for Wikipedia. He of course wants to use this as a way to promote his site as much as possible. I have researched the rules at Wikipedia and I understand that my account could be banned if I submit something that is considered spam.

Without disclosing the topic or niche that my client is in, I will simply say that I will need to be creative to make the article authoritative. Although my client is willing to pay very well for the article, I am considering passing on this writing request. What do you think?

Here is some helpful information:

Wikipedia:Your first article - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I wanted to point this one out:

Do not create pages about yourself, your company, your band or your friends, nor pages that advertise, are personal essays or other articles you would not find in an encyclopedia.

I don't know if this is worth it. You are going to waste a lot of time just to have an editor delete your article. In addition to that your customer probably won't be too happy and probably blame what you wrote as the reason for deletion and not Wikipedia policy.

If I were you I would pass.

Hi Debbie,

Does your client effectively want his own Wikipedia page or coverage on another page. If it's the former I would pass on the idea. If, however, it's the latter it should be achievable if you take your time, add information slowly and carefully. For example, nearly all major towns have a Wikipedia page and that's where I would start.

If it pays well, find a way to do it but make sure that the client understands the risks.

Cheers, Clive

Thanks for your response Andy - that's exactly what I was thinking but I was wondering if I was wrong. I thought there might be another stream of income here that I should learn about but the guidelines at Wikipedia make the task sound daunting.

In the time it would take to provide an article suitable for Wiki I could probably write 3 for someone else - so the money this client is willing to pay really isn't a trade off.

Just take a look at the Coca Cola Company f.ex.
And write a informal article i Wikipedia.
No BS, bragging, spam or advertising.

Yeah - the Coca Cola page is done very nicely, but I'm not so sure this business has enough history and information of interest to build a page like that. At least not without an extensive amount of work and the risk of being banned.

I may tell my client that he needs to submit the work under his own account, not mine.

Well, I think I have already decided not to do this particular project. Maybe I will do others in the future - after I learn more about the ins and outs of Wiki.
