Phone number on the site?

Lately (ever since I have started charging for my product - it used to be free) I have been receiving email from my users that they want to talk to a "person" over the phone. I give them the phone number and they call me...usually those people end up buying.

I am sure there are lot more people who wanted to call somebody but couldn't because there was no phone number on the site. Should I put my number there? Usually I see that sites do not have a phone numer (sometimes finding email address is hard too). Why? If puting the phone number can increase your sales then why not?

I don't want to put my personal number there, and don't want to get an extra line either. Is there any free call forwarding service? so that if spammers and marketters get hold of that number then I just start using the new number?

thanks

I recommend you get a Google Voice number and forward it to your cellphone. That way you can basically turn it on and off when you need to and can block numbers as well.

Google voice is not open to everybody yet. They might open it up in few weeks. That would have been perfect though. Any other site like that?

Are you in the US? If so just request a GV invite and you should have one in about a week or so.

Yes, I am in US and have already filled up the invite. Let's see what happens.

From the feedback I have received for my customers I would place a phone number in your website to build trust with your users.

I receive a great deal of calls from my main site via an openly displayed phone number. Many people are very surprised when I actually answer!

Having a phone number certainly helps build trust and has helped my business immensely.

How about trying a temporary mobile number as a test to see how it works out?

Go ahead and put your phone number on the site.
Usually when people call you they are already going to buy your product.
They just want to make sure they can talk to someone before and after they make the purchase.
This also builds trust with your buyers and potential buyers.

Then I take that 1 866 # and have a outsource rep answer it (cost is $900 a month). Also person does live chat, email, MSN, YM and all methods of communication. I agree, and I don't get lots of 'bad' calls, most are good ones, and really helps credibility!

My experience says that providing a phone number and real physical contact information adds proof that you are a real business and not some Internet scammer. Based on that, I would say get the phone number. (The Google Voice idea is a good one.)

The business analyst in me says set up a split test on your site with Google Analytics. Do an A/B split with your phone number prominently displayed and not on the web site and measure the conversions. Then you know the real dollar value of having the phone number and can make a measured business decision on how to staff for calls.

      This is fantastic advice.

I have had my phone number on my main site for 5 years, and have never had any "prank calls".

    Hello jkiley,

I have always listed an 800 number on my websites that goes directly to my desk.

It gives creditability and helps to make fast sales from just a few calls.

Many folks prefer to use the opt-in box and receive information that way.

To me it can be a real profit maker as long as you are dealing with a high priced item.

If a lower priced item, i recommend using a opt-in box

    Best Regards

You could also get a Magic Jack. I think it's around $19 for the year. It gives you a phone number that you can use. When people call either the magic jack phone will ring, or it will go to voice mail and you can listen on your PC.

FYI: I love your CraigsList Reader. It is really cool. I would love to see the Kijiji reader and perhaps USFreeAds added as a module rather than a different app. That way one could search all the classifieds at once for a particular thing.

Make sure you measure your conversions and conversion rate before and after the change.

I've found that by offering a "Free Recorded Message Reveals........Call 555-1234 x 123" gets prospects to HEAR my voice and be "assured" I'm a "real person".

I do NOT offer "800" numbers. I feel that if I haven't interested prospects enough to spend their own money for a phone call...they AREN'T that interested anyway.

Also....with products that sell for less than $150 I do NOT offer a phone commection to me. Not worth my time. However, with most of the products I've sold being $300 and more....potential buyers DO...want to speak to someone about their purchase.

I use a skype-in number. Have used it for the last few years. I don't get a ton of calls, but a lot of people who call do it either for help using the product or to make other financial arrangements (like sending a check or money order...or wanting an extension on my latest "sale")
