INTERNET MARKETING

Check out this website article and see how clicking on the highlighted
text brings up 'explainer notes' to the side. Can you tell what
is being used to get this effect?

According to my developer, it looks like custom javascript.

It is pretty slick though.

  I'm no javascript specialist but it doesn't look to difficult.
  
  Simple css or bootstrap for the columns and simple javascript for the effect. But yeah the effect does look good

While it's not exactly the same, you could try implementing a tooltip plugin for a similar, yet different effect.

I am no JS or CSS expert either, but I was thinking, it doesn't necessarily have to be in a "sidebar". Might not even be a side bar on that page. Think that is the trick.

Seems you just set the position of the text box to be to the side, like in a sidebar? There are plenty of shortcode type plugins with difference text display options, maybe use one of those and set the position off to the side? Just thinking out loud.
