Mainstream...Coming from the Adult Market

Nice to meet everyone.

I've been in the adult business since 98. This forum looks a bit like some of the of the forums I've been hanging around in the adult business. Well, minus the photos of all the pretty girls. lol

Anyways...what brings me here. A good friend of mine wanted me to partner up with him on a new product line. I liked the product, have the team to build/design this new site, any coding needed, writers, and I'm with a great hosting company (Mojohost), so why not. Something different I say! Mainstream.

Here's the dealio. I need help advertising in mainstream. I want to buy traffic that would best suite my ROI. I'm interested in really anything that would generate traffic to my website, paid or unpaid. I'm open to trying anything.

Here's the product website.
Light My Toy - Home

It's just been launched and we're doing the regular thing. FB, Twitter, Ebay, Etsy, and a bunch of free submission sites as well. I really like some of these gadget websites out there like ThatsWhyImBroke.com . Great stuff on there. Good place for my gadget but we havn't set up our Amazon store yet. This particular site only works with Amazon stores as an affiliate. I really think that this product is really cool and if put in front of enough people it will generate a lot of sales. Everyone likes lights right? Especially portable led lights where you can place them just about anywhere.

My buddy launched his site version a couple years ago. It was really bad and he really just dealt with the snowboard community. That's another reason I got involved. He wasn't marketing outside of just "snowboarders", and personally these snowboarders are a pain in the ass. They risk a high amount of returns because the lights are subject to extreme conditions. "Little Johnny came by and ran over Peter's snowboard and my lights ripped right off my board and your lights suck I want to return them".

These lights have endless applications. Please check out the website. I'll take any direction and very much appreciate anyone's comments. I look forward to getting to know people here.

Sincerely,
Ed

What took you so long to stray away from adult? I left adult media around 2000 when the conversion rate on a gallery was 1 in 50,000 and that was considered to be good. The nail in the coffin to that business was when Acacia Research tried to tell me I was infringing on their patents because I owned some AM related domains (that had no content.)

I can definitely tell you came from adult Your site is a bunch of images, you really need to work some text content into there, like for example on the how to page.

I'm not sure if this is intentional, but clicking your logo doesn't goto the home page on any page besides the home page.

I'm not seeing any backlinks, that might be a little tough with that product.

There's no affiliate program. I doubt it would pump crazy sales but there's really no reason not to have one.

I would test adwords, bing, (you already said FB), possibly DSP if you can find some good target domains. Make sure you get some kind of reasonable tracking setup.

BTW: Conversion rates coming from adult are going to seem insane. Some people pull 5-25% conversions on paid traffic. So take whatever numbers you're used to, and multiply by like 100. I have a site right now (affiliate marketing) that no joke makes me $2 a click (average) on free google traffic.

PS: is that a web.com design? it's not a problem, just curious.

I never said I left adult. I never will. It's always been profitable and continues to be that way. We have continued to evolve and embrace the changes over the years.

We have google analytic in place for stats. Pointers well taken on the web design and placing more text. My designer that did this site has always worked in adult as well. I will add all the text that is in the video as reading material below each instructional video. Again, thanks, good point!

I say...I'm looking forward to that!

Although I really appreciate the help with web design I am here to get some pointers on advertising and purchasing traffic in the mainstream world.

I started in adult in 98 as well. We might have crossed paths or traded links. I was dumb enough to stay till like 2006 or so. Left for the same reasons as irawr did. When I started 1:50 where pretty common. When I left 1:500 was good. Sad state.

I agree, conversions are going to be great. Make alot more in mainstream with much less traffic.

Obviously, you need to track your traffic, to find out what converts the best for you. Sounds like you already have a pretty good plan in place. Seems social would be one of the best routes for you, both free and paid. Twitter, Facebook and many others sell traffic as well. Just gotta test and track your ads, it's a must.

And of course, figure out who your perfect market is. At least focus on one segment at a time. Trying to cover every possible audience would be a losing battle, probably cost you more than you make.

LOL. Another doom and gloom story! Man people lighten up!

      I say...I love it!

I'm not afraid to spend money on campaign ads. Really I'm looking for that one site out there that's like the whale.

Remember the site ConsumptionJunction? lol. That was a great site to advertise on. Now that, for me, was the holy grail!

Not doom and gloom, just the reality I experienced. Did it for almost 10 years. Watched my ratios go from 1:50 to over 1:500. Cashquest use to fedex my checks. Quite a few good years. AVS traffic was literally money in the bank.

Glad your stuff is still making money. Seriously. Hope it keeps going for you. Mine was still making money, just not enough to justify the time I was spending on them. I knew there was a better way to generate an income. Something I wouldn't be embarrassed to tell any one about. And I sold my stuff while it was still worth something.

Also, seemed like every other day another affiliate program was getting busted on GFY for scamming in one way or another. Last time I stopped by GreenGuy and Jim, it was a ghost town.

Sure there is still money to be made in the space, just so tough for joe average to carve out some cash these days.

Consumption Junction sounds familiar, but never used it. Must have been expensive advertising back then. One I remember is college humor.

For you I would guess Facebook or Pinterest would be the whales your looking for. Or do FBA through amazon.
