Help my friend with his high school project on internet marketers

Righto, I got a close friend of mine (he's just a kid, 17 y/o) who's studying business in high school right now and has chosen to write a report on Internet Marketers. He wants to get a clear picture of what internet marketers do and their lifestyle. Hopefully we can help him out a bit, cheers!

The questions

Do you live solely on the income from your online ventures? If so, what kind of business do you run? (Don't need to be very specific here, but would be cool if you guys could give him some detailed info)

If so, where do you live? (He pointed out that he jas read about 'guru's that live on tropical islands living like kings, but anyone can live like a king in Thailand for $500 a month).

Do you have a job besides IM? (Do you have this job because you're not making enough to support yourself or is it because you think the risk is too high?)

What made you go down the IM path? (Did you get lured in by those "make money quick schemes"?)

Is your IM business sustainable? (Will you still be making money from your business in 6-12 months from now on?)

How old are you?

How long have you been doing IM? (How long did it take you to make your first dollar online?)

That's all he could think of right now, I will add more questions if any come up.

Cheers guys, let's help and motivate him!

Every one of those questions has been posted as a thread here many times - you can look them up and let him read them.

Don't mean to be rude - but there's a reason you must be 18 to join the WF. It might be a good subject for your friend to write a school paper on....but he needs to do the work instead of asking people to hand him the answers.

Truthfully - the in depth questions in quotes make me think perhaps YOU are asking the questions....

Are you kidding me? There's no better way to get REAL answers from REAL people than asking here. Why should he go through the trouble of finding similar answers when he can ask EXACTLY the questions he want, and have them answered?

If people answer "how i do SEO" threads everyday then you can probably answer this one as well. Give the kid a break.

Are kids no longer required to do their own actual research?

Might be just me but I thought that asking people that work with IM would be considered research.

Why should he go through the trouble of finding similar answers when he can ask EXACTLY the questions he want,
Because he's a kid and should learn something from the projects he does. And because this forum is for 18 and over....whether you ask questions for him or not.

I repeat - the comments in parens do not sound like a 17 yr old who knows nothing about IM...sounds like a list of questions you helped him compose and then told him other people would answer for him.

Why don't YOU answer them? You can do the research in threads here....and give him a synopsis of the hundreds of answers that have been posted here already in answer to those very same questions.

The comments inside the brackets are things I added to the question, hency why I put them there. I thought his question were vague and getting one liners for all of his question would suck.

I have already answered them, but I'm just one guy of many. I cannot answer for everyone else.

            OK, I'll bite.

            1. Consulting for offline & online clients. Funnel design, sales training, operations improvement, & copywriting.

            2. North Carolina.

            3. This is my more-than-full-time job.

            4. I was in a rural area that required me to find clients who could pay what I needed--meaning I had to find them farther afield (see what I did there).

            5. This is my 4th year. You get out what you bring with you, and what you put in. The business model is constantly changing: that's a major misconception people have. They think you're going to figure it out once and it's going to last that way forever. No. It's changing all the time.

            6. 40. I had 15 years of corporate experience before starting, so I had a good foundation of business skills...something a lot of people don't, and frankly it hurts them when it comes time to do sales & marketing, and manage projects.

            7. I made money pretty much immediately. I put a $20 product up with the best info I had available (the production values are awful and nowadays I cringe, but the content was great). I remember my first buyer, a Friday night purchaser from Australia. That feeling when you make a sale from someone you've never met never goes away.

At the time, I spent 3 months giving info in the Offline section here. Then I released a product and there was a lot of pent-up demand so it did really well. I also did freelance work.
Thanks for not being a jerk about it. Great detailed answers as well, I'm sure he'll appreciate it!

See - that's my point (though there's always someone who will answer).

He has not even put in the thought to craft his own questions - you had to do that for him. You want people here to give him the answers.

What does he learn from that? Not a damned thing.

However, questions like this are killing this forum. This is the second thread about "need questions answered for.... In that thread a long time, successful marketer got so disgusted today he quit the forum. He's not the first to leave in frustration.

I would rather protect the integrity of the forum by "questioning the questions" than I would to focus on doing a 17 yr old's homework. That is WHY I question threads like this one.

I'm happy to help out. Here's my responses...

Do you live solely on the income from your online ventures? If so, what kind of business do you run? (Don't need to be very specific here, but would be cool if you guys could give him some detailed info)

Yes. I have a couple of online businesses, one in the MMO niche where I provide training, coaching and consulting services, and one in the Education niche where I mainly do lead generation for educational institutions.

If so, where do you live? (He pointed out that he jas read about 'guru's that live on tropical islands living like kings, but anyone can live like a king in Thailand for $500 a month).

I live in Brisbane, Australia. The biggest tropical island in the world!

Do you have a job besides IM? (Do you have this job because you're not making enough to support yourself or is it because you think the risk is too high?)

    No. I'm a full-time IMer.

What made you go down the IM path? (Did you get lured in by those "make money quick schemes"?)

I came across it by accident back in 2007 while I was trying to promote my MLM business online. There were ads everywhere about affiliate marketing and the more I looked into it, the more I liked the idea of earning commissions selling other people's products.

The first money I made was promoting CPA offers using Google Adwords. From there I moved to promoting Clickbank products and within 2 years I became one of the top 100 Clickbank affiliates.

Looking for a more stable income, I went into email marketing and have been doing that ever since.

Today, I mainly sell my own products and services, but still promote affiliate offers. Typically products that I personally use.

Is your IM business sustainable? (Will you still be making money from your business in 6-12 months from now on?)

It sure is. Have been very fortunate to be doing this full-time for the past almost 8 years now.

    How old are you?

    41.

How long have you been doing IM? (How long did it take you to make your first dollar online?)

I started back in 2007. It didn't take me very long to make my first profitable sale, a few months maybe, but I did made a lot of mistakes at the beginning. Back then (and still now) there was a lot of useless products being sold about how to make money with affiliate marketing. Fortunately, I eventually came across someone that was genuine and that gave me a simple system that worked.
