How to make money with an online discussion forum?

What are some strategies for making money from a online forum? Obviously I see how Warrior Forum does it but that's not the route I'm trying to go. In my case my forum will only deal with one topic.

Selling advertising seems pretty straight forward. What are other ways to monetize a forum?

    You could add a buy, sell, trade section to your forum and charge a fee when sellers sell something on your website.

    If it were me, I'd personally go the membership site route.

    Create an authority site around the one topic. Have some free content (blog, podcast, etc...) and then have premium content for paid members (videos, whitepapers/reports, etc...) and have the forum only accessible to premium members as a value proposition.

    You could use the forum as the free organic content and then create a membership site encompassing the forum. Similar to the War Room and you could add additional content, depending on the topic, such as a high-quality video course.

    great to create a forum on an issue very specific.
    Then to earn a forum post new banners

    Especially if your forum is on a specific topic, you can become an affiliate to sites that offer services or products in the niche of interest to your users.
