You can use your blog to build an email list

You can use it to further promote your brand/use it as a place for people to connect with you

You can promote aff products/your own products

You can also help out other people who have no idea about the topic you're blogging about

I find blogging is an excellent way to both further your brand and demonstrate your authority to potential clients/followers. Offering high-quality content that your target audience finds helpful builds your credibility and reputation, making them more inclined to purchase products based on your recommendation. You can also funnel traffic and demonstrate your brand's authority through social media through a similar marketing concept.

The main benefits for me is that it provides a stream of content to the user, which you can also schedule ahead of time, there is little cost to entry regarding equipment and Google loves written content and if created correctly, your blog will draw in additional traffic.

    1. Increases search engine traffic
    2. Humanizes your brand
    3. Supports your social media initiatives
    4. Builds authority in your industry
    5. Improves conversion rates
    6. Helps generate inbound links
    7. Helps you rank for long-tail search queries
    8. Increases leads
    9. Facilitates valuable discussion
    10. Allows you to achieve ‘freshness’

Blogging on your company’s website is one of the best ways to differentiate yourself from your competitors. By providing your own unique thoughts and insights, you naturally grow your search traffic, customer trust and ultimately, sales. To some extent, blogging also levels the playing field with big brands, giving small businesses the unprecedented opportunity to compete with big businesses with big budgets.

If you're niche is your passion, it's so much fun!
If you're smart, you're helping people in every post and giving them solutions where you earn a commission. (affiliate marketing)
You're making relationships with other bloggers in the niche you're in, always valuable somewhere down the line.
And lastly, a total no-brainer is SEO, the value a fresh content with smartly chosen "buyers" long tail terms, can be very profitable for a blog. Choose the right terms, write the right post and drive the right search traffic and you can be making a full-time income, by rinsing and repeating that process.

A blog is technically just a platform for developing content - when you install the blog on your own domain you control the platform upon which you host that content.

To build traffic, get attention, traffic, leads and sales you want to be producing content

Ideally that content is tailored for the places in which your audience is active online - social such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube are all places that you should be developing content for

Additional content should be hosted on your blog - both to attract SEO traffic and to act as additional content store that YOU control (as any other of the locations above could change their rules, shut down your account, etc...and you don't want to be completely dependent on them)

What we typically do is develop content for our blogs each day - sometimes written (mix of long and short), sometimes video, sometimes audio (podcast) - we then tailor content for each of the social platforms to drive traffic back toward either our blog or one of our landing pages.

One of the highlights that a blog can do for someone is build up their BRAND. And get exposure to their BRAND to a large group of people over a large period of time

Blogging was always supposed to be geared towards building Authority and providing a platform for people who had interesting and important things to say.

But over the years it has been diluted with Sites that are quickly put together to make money as quick as possible. Offering negligible value

You asked two questions - the first in the title and the second in your post. I'll answer the first question:

Not everyone should blog. For various reasons. You can find examples of big name companies who have gone through and gotten rid of the majority of content on their site, and sales went up. This is an interesting article. I am not saying I fully agree with it, but it is interesting:

Less content marketing, more quality content | Gerry McGovern

Other reasons are as simple as it is a LONG TERM commitment. To me, when I come across a blog that has a year of articles but hasn't been posted to for 1+ years, it reflects poorly in my eyes as to that person's commitment to whatever subject the blog is about.

Further, people have different skill sets, and for some, writing in way that will keep attention doesn't come naturally or easily.

Plenty of reasons as to why one shouldn't blog ...

People blog for different reasons. Some for the fun of it and while some to brand themselves as an authority figure and build relationship with their audience. Which ever way its completely up to the blogger's goals and intention.

You bet. Also, as a side benefit, you end up focusing on what you are spending time writing about, you do a little research to be sure you are covering everything - you learn more. As you learn more, you feel more like an authority. As you feel more like an authority, you end up writing more like an authority. Upward spiral.

Another side benefit - you end up meeting people online who comment on your blog, and sometimes that can further your professional network.

You can use a start a blog to write about things you love or your passions and monetize it to earn residual income and also to build a sizable email list.

    Good question. Well.....

    - You get to interact with leads and customers
    - It's another form of email marketing (if you use RSS and a "subscribe to blog" form)
    - It can be your main model of making money
    - You don't have to go through the treacherous task of creating a website
    - You can get a lot of traffic fast
    - You can promote adsense or affiliate or your own products on your blog
    - You can ping search engine services automatically
    - You OWN the blog (assuming you're not using BlogSpot)

I think the real question is, how is a blog not beneficial LOL ;-).

    1) Leverage (once its out there, it's out there forever... leveraged assets)
    2) Each blog post is it's own profit center
    3) You're educating your marketplace instead of pitching them
    4) Makes you the authority in your niche
    5) Attracts leads & sales to you
    6) Builds your email list to market to your leads over & over

Creating a business that runs without you 24/7. It's kinda cool

It's the best way to build an online brand

    It is scalable

It is modular (you can take bits and pieces and promote on social media)

It gives you a soapbox you can use to address your audience.

You can build a following, I would only recommend blogging if it's truly something you are interested in and not just to make money (IMO at least)

Blogging is one way to be able to share your ideas and just have other people who go through the article you have posted and give their on verdict on the same. Blogging also helps a lot when it comes to the retention rate of the clients in terms of marketing. It gives the readers a reason to return on the website since it provides a platform for feedback and further inquiry. So when you are a marketer, you can decide to do blog posting for the above purpose.

Specialize. Micro Target. For example I know of a 6 figure earner who has a blog about rabbits. Another one who writes about coffee. You blog to a very specific audience which helps you rank faster on Google. As traffic comes in you can begin to monetize your blog and now you are blogging for fun and profit, which I can say from experience makes it even more fun.

Hi, there are obviously a lot or replies...a lot to read.

But here is the big thing: you have to SHOUT your message to be heard above all the noise on the internet.

Blogging gives you a platform.....a soapbox....to shout from.

Write it, syndicate it and SHOUT about it.....get the word out!

Everyone has submitted great answers, but I will add my own two cents.

Blogging is a vital part of brand management. Basically, every blog post defines your company's brand in real time, keeps your clients engaged, and adds depth to your product or service as defined by your marketing efforts.
