Default Comments on Blogs, being misunderstood?

Just read a great article on michel fortin's blog

[Here's the link to it- http://www.michelfortin.com/flustere...ndly-comments/ ]

It just seems the comment spam war has just begun. and the spammers are changing they're methods- or did I forget to mention the fact that some IM'ers are fast joing the bandwagon in the pursuit of "link juice" and UNtargeted traffic.

Should I be thinking of rolling back to the default 'rel=no follow' state?

What are your views on this whole blog commenting fiasco?

[ I've added a poll too, what's your view? ]

Wordpress allows you to turn off comments automatically after a specific time frame now and i set this myself to 14 days. That combined with akismet has dramatically reduced my comment spam.

Now let me ask you this...

1. Comments help you blog because they ping services and show your site is updated.

2. Google likes to see a variety of outgoing links on your blog (or any website)

3. Adding the nofollow will discourage the good commentors.

4. Are you reacting because of something that "might" happen or are you actually having an issue with comment spam right now that is actually taking up your time and is more then akismet can handle?

I quite Agree with your method, are you suggesting that it's a great idea to follow all links?

Maybe you did not read the Michel's blog post. It's something i've seen a lot these days.

Short comments such as "great post" or "nice one" that don't add to the discussion or show any opinion or any slight detail that this "person" (that is if they are indeed persons) has even read your post.

The fact is that they look genuine but literally they're spam. Mainly to get backlinks and "Free" traffic

Thanks for your Thought, Nonetheless.

That is not anything really new... the thing is just keep akismet updated and it catches most of those comments... not all but most.

As owner of http://www.commentkahuna.com it frustrated and amazes me how lazy people are... just take a moment and read the post and leave a worthwhile comment... get your link approved and everyone is happy.

As a blogger, i shake my head everyday from the receiving end with some of the attempts people make. Here is an example I just took from my blog http://www.johncow.com and yes akismet caught it.

Found your blog while browsing Google. Bookmarked. Looking forward to more nutrition tips.

People are just ridiculous... but hey, they keep it interesting.

My blog is dofollow but I close comments after a certain amount of time. I like to reward my commentors.

I still get spam, but Akismet takes care of it and I just delete.
it's really no big deal to me...

Thanks for your thoughts, Karen and Canuck.
I quite Agree with your ideas.

Askimet sure handles them and manual delete works just perfectly but for a popular blog that follows all links it would not very easy.

Closing comments after a given time is quite a good idea but I use a plugin that rejects all comments less than the value determined by me(in this case I use 30characters) meaning your comment must be above 30 characters before it can be accepted.
