how to find the top sites in a particular niche, sorted by traffic and popularity?

Hello fellows!

The title says it all.

I want to find the top sites in a particular micro niche, like for instance: "learn to play guitar" etc.

I used to do it before using alexa.com "find sites about" search bar and it gave me results of the top sites by the keyword that I put. Like here

However with the new version this option seems to be gone or it is paid.

Now it only gives data if you put a particular site, but doesn't shows you all possible sites in that particular niche. (or probably it does but with the paid version)

So my question is: do you know of any replacement (other site or method) about that exact market research ?

I would have thought that the top sites come to the top of the Google listing when you put in the keyword in quotes.

    lowrider,

Don't depend upon Alexa for anything if you want credible data. The sites that Alexa draws from are those that have the Alexa toolbar installed. Do you know how many that is?

Alexa toolbars are only on a tiny fraction of the sites online so the results you are seeing from them are only accurate in their universe (which excludes the vast majority of sites online.)

When you say "top" sites in a microniche do you mean the most trafficked? the most popular? the best information? the most credible? the most backlinked? the sites with the most authority? the sites ranked highest in the search engines?

"Top" sites is a very vague description.

Hey, thanks for your quick and precise reply. I watched this method of sorting site domains from a Frank Kern's program regarding finding the top sites in a niche and bidding on their domain names as a keyword in Google or Yahoo or Bing. In the video he explains it using Alexa.com, however the material is from 2010 and obvious alexa design and services changed since them.

And to the question about what do I mean by top sites: Top sites = most searched sites, which will be perhaps the most popular and most trafficked sites.
