hidden .htaccess files?

Good day all'

Love that new forum smell, don't you?

My question is, how do you get cpanel to show hidden files such as .htaccess
I have looked all over and can't seem to find the "on" switch if you will.

I use hostmonster and apthost.

Formally hostgator where I don't remember having this problem,
nothing wrong with hostgator. just the winds of fate, I guess.

    To paraphrase the important bit, it seems that some hosts put a hidden htaccess file on your server to control your hosting. It is write protected so you can't upload or create your own file.

      That is absurd. Wordpress is out on those hosts. Most scripts are out. Ecommerce is out. What do they expect you to host????

      Glad I don't have that problem.

        I hear ya, but most people don't want to install their own blog (I'm talking Joe Public).

        Most people don't need to run scripts, and they certainly don't need a shopping cart.

        My guess is that most hosting companies give their customers a tiny bit of disk space and a bunch of 'wizards' to get them online.

        ...which would suit around 99% of punters down to the ground.

          Thanks for the link Cubed I will definetly check that one out.

          Since I asked this question, I have managed to get one of the hosts to work with this ( it's
          Andrew Fletchers free link cloaker, which I used a while back,it was quit good and easy
          hust takes a mysql database)

          Anyway the way I got it to work was surfing around the web, some guy had said if you use filezilla you can use server/force showing hidden files (dropdown).
          For those interested.

          It worked on Hostmonster but not on apthost. I can still use it on apthost, just not the XXX/recommends/suchandsuch...
          because of huge .htaccess commands already there for a media site.( I downloaded it because I can see the .htaccess files with filezilla, put the commands from the flc in there reuploaded , screwed up site...backed down again...took it off..reload... site fine.
          so I guess I will have to live with it for awhile.

    I just logged in to hostgator and using the file manager was able to see my .htaccess files. With FTP you can use the command -a to show hidden files.

    They should appear in FTP if not contact your host.
