Question about "submit URL to Google:

Hi,

I've long been wondering this. After I write a blog post, I use Submit URL to Google to get it indexed faster. Sometimes, I will later--could be the same day, or a week, month, or year later--change something in the post. I then again do Submit URL to Google. I may even continue to edit and resubmit the post over time, adding new products or whatnot. Let's say that after each submission, the resubbed post climbs in the Google rankings.

Am I losing those rankings of the previous submission when I resubmit a post? In other words, is it better to only submit the post once? (I read advice that said to resubmit posts to index the new content, but it didn't go into this question). Also, even if I do not submit URL at all, of course Google is indexing anyway, submit just speeds it up. Does Google wipe out rankings every time it crawls?

It seems if it did, then some of my posts would not have made it to decent rankings. But, I have not kept track of it as it never really occurred to me to.

Thanks for any thoughts.

I would be surprised here if anyone could answer only a question that Google itself could answer for you definitively.

Thanks, yes, that occurred to me, but I think people who keep track of their rankings would be able to have an educated guess. If a post continues to climb, or does not drop, after resubmitting, then it's OK to resubmit.

One thing I have noticed is that URLs seem to in some way keep their place in Google--if something makes them drop, they will go back to their former place. I had a site that was no. 4 for a keyword (it wasn't a monetized site). I had to make some content private and the site vanished to way way down. Weirdly, it still show up as being no. 4 when I look it up in rank checkers, years later. Not sure what that means.

Rankings change every time you edit your site. But there's no way of telling if they will go up or down in advance... Unless you work for google...

Think about it this way: If you create a page about underwater basket weaving and submit it it will be indexed when someone is looking for underwater basket weaving. Now, if you change that site and talk about beachside basket weaving the content has changed, thus it's no longer relevant as underwater basket weaving.
        Makes sense?

But, if you go ahead and change some random words and typos it won't likely change in rankings.

The only time I submit anything to google is when the site I am building is completed, then I submit the sitemap. After that my posts are indexed naturally in a day or two. I find submitting to be a waste of time that could be well spent doing other things

If you are running WordPress, any good sitemap plugin will automatically update your sitemap.xml file every time you add and/or change content. Since that sitemap.xml was originally submitted to google, it is looked at every time your site is crawled by the googlebot, and any new pages/posts are immediately indexed.

If not, you'll have to update your sitemap.xml file manually when you add any new pages or change the structure of your site.

Google Webmaster Tools will tell you if G is aware of your sitemap file. If it is, there is no need to re-submit.

OK but if I look at the Wayback Machine for various sites, it seems the crawler is only every few months, whereas when you submit URL I believe it is usually within an hour or two. Then the rank bounces around for a few days before more or less settling, I was wondering if changing the post sends it back to square one but I think it does not unless maybe big things are changed such as post title or slug.

I'm not sure I understand what correlation you are trying to make here...

The Wayback Machine has NO relationship to Google as far as I know. It is run by a non-profit and simply archives periodic page snapshots. These snapshots have absolutely nothing to do with the googlebot, nor the frequency with which the it crawls your site.

Yes you are right. They have their own crawler. My mistake.
Hmm, not sure why Google has the submit URL button if it does nothing at all..

Simple... the submit URL button accommodates those webmasters who do not have a sitemap.xml file on their site.

Yes, create a sitemap and do a hyperlink on the footer. What it will help is that, Google bot will access your website sitemap (which you can submit to Google websmaster tool). Google will crawl and index your pages on your website.

Due to the up trends of backlink spamming, indexing becoming harder and harder. Some of my unique content are not even indexed after submitting to Google, indexing services.

Hence, if your content is not unique, etc, you got a chance that Google might not index your page.

Google prefers ranking fresh pages to stale, old ones. So, by adding updated content and images to your web pages, you are going to create a better user experience.

This will cause people to stay on your site longer and increase the likelihood of them linking to your site and even sharing your content on the social web.

    Hi,

First of all to submit URL
the best way I learnt is
    to go to google.com/addurl

But I have also learnt that
    by submitting URL does not
    rank you to top pages,

The way you can rank top
    pages are by getting good
    keyword content and meta
    text...

    Also scoring points with
    your contents...

    This way if you change
    anything in your post,
    I believe you don't have
    to keep submitting it.

    Best to also confirm with
    someone who is a pro

    Good Luck...

If your site has any value whatsoever Google will pick it up and index it, plain and simple. How fast does this happen? Well that is a bit trickier to answer. From my experience, if the site is owned by Google ie. Blogger, You Tube, etc it will get indexed the fastest with no need to manually do it yourself. If however you are working with a different type of site and want to insure it get's picked up as fast as possible, then I say use the indexing tool.

Whenever I upload a non-You Tube video such as Vimeo or Daily Motion, I always use Google's indexing tool. I hope that helps!
