Need advice getting traffic to a new Classified Ads website

I'm looking to build a new Classified Ads website and I badly need some marketing advice.

It'll probably not kick Craigslist out of business anytime soon -- but that's not my target for now. Rather to make it work and get some momentum. That's where the trouble starts - traffic.

I have some good ideas about what needs to be done (features, platform). Development is not a problem for me, I'm a full stack developer with a lot of experience. The site is not ready but getting done isn't a big issue. And I'm not new to owning this kind of site, I've been in this area long time ago. I had classified ad sites and directories, years ago.

The biggest problem you're going to encounter though, with such a project, is gaining momentum.

Getting enough ads/users and a large quantity of traffic. I need both.

I've recently seen how one of the bigger platforms did it - they spent millions in a massive TV ad campaign. I don't have that kind of budget now.

In the past, I simply used SEO to get that traction. That doesn't work the same today, and although it'll bring traffic later, I cannot really count on it. Classified ads websites are kind of generic, and due to this they don't rank very well. Side note many users post short ads and this leads to a large amount of thinner content.

I have researched certain ideas, but with no luck so far. Paid ads are probably out of question as it'll be way too costly. Or am I missing some way to do it. Tried 7Search, low CPC but junk traffic.

I know Backpage for example is making phone calls to posters on other sites and requesting approval to freely repost their ad. They even called me several times. This is cumbersome and kind of expensive I guess.

So my question is:

What tools/solutions/approach do you think I can use to promote this kind of website? What channels to use? How?

I can't shake the feeling that there's something I'm missing here. Any suggestions will be appreciated, thanks!

Just curious. Knowing all that you've uncovered I am wondering why you are compelled to still go through with making a classifieds site?

I'm really not so sure you are missing much of anything.

If you don't have investment funds, then I suggest you start with these problems here first.

Think of something to make your site not so generic. Think of a way to get users to post longer ads or do something to add real content to the site.

Here's an idea - ask users who'd like to post an ad to send you articles on topics that might help fill out the site. In return, give them some kind of featured spot.

IE: I want to post an ad for a babysitter - or better yet to offer my baby sitting services. I send you an article about the importance of selecting a great sitter and what people who are looking to hire one should look for. I give you my article, you add it to a "tips" area on your site, you push me to the top with my ad.

You get some nice content for SEO help, articles written for free, all you need to do is approve.

I have some investment funds, only not in the millions range. A few thousand $ for marketing.

Just an idea. Never tried it, but would if I were trying to do what you are doing.

Hope it works out for you.

Yes, I have to try it first. It might work out - or not. We'll see. Thanks

Why would we use your site when we already have sites like craigslist, usfreeads and other already established sites? What sets you apart from the rest?... When you can answer these two questions, go ahead and work on your site..

For tools/solutions/approach to use to promote this kind of website.. You need a ton of traffic and you need it fast and in big numbers so you do need some money for paid advertisements... I don´t think article writing, facebook ads and seo wiil do it for you... You need to hit this hard and fast and continue to drive traffic for months to build up a strong brand and a long term customer base.. If you know how to build and manage a site like this, team up with someone who can take care of the financial part... Good luck!

I have the answers for these questions. There are several things existing classified ads are still missing, so there will be differences. Some of the things they do are pretty crude in many respects. Therefore I have all the reasons to believe it'll be different, and maybe it will be regarded as a new generation of classified ad sites.

I have no concerns in this area. Just about traffic (later it will likely gain its own momentum, but it needs a certain critical mass to get there).

      This is the big one.

Article writing... seo... maybe only if I split the thing in a network of a lot of different niched classified ad sites. I'm not sure this is a good idea though, most likely not.

I don't expect a generic site to rank well unless it gets a ton of authority (IBL), which is tough at the beginning.

Facebook ads, adwords - likely way too expensive.

You might be onto something here - massive investment. I like to bootstrap though, and not a big fan of getting equity partners, I'm more of a lone wolf on this one. I have a few thousands $ in available cash, maybe I'll just up it to the range of tens of thousands, at some point next. Still it looks perhaps not enough. And I don't expect VC funding for my project. Especially in the post-unicorn age.

I wonder if there's any traffic solution, less targeted, niche-based, that I can purchase for lower CPC, and might be useful in this scenario.

You should create a viral video and promote it via social channels. You could send PR to the media. You could even talk to the local tv program about your idea and start building your costumers base locally and only then spread.

The most important thing - use your Guerrilla marketing skills.

    Good Luck!

    1. advertise your site in warrior classifieds and give special discount for featured ad for warriors..
    2. you can do ppc ads with affordable ppc ad networks
    3. you can advertise in olx, locanto, megalinktraffic etc..
The above definitely brings in more users and advertisers to your site ..
and also focus on one particular location first and then expand to other areas
you can go for offline newspaper ads in the particular locality to get more
people post their needs and then scale up..

Can to give me an example as to what you refer to as affordable ppc ad networks? Which ones, spcecifically?

Side note, locanto and olx are competitors, so no, I won't be able to advertise there. Maybe just calling users @ reposting.

I would consider checking out setting up a Facebook page and creating a community interested in buying/selling around it. These pages are always popular, and easy to market. You can then link back to your site. You can always offer to 'feature' one offer a day on your Facebook page, which is at no cost for yourself, but offers value to the seller.
