When I was in Colorado I used to go in on days off and help the Manager of a local lodge when she was short of help. The lodge had been repo'd by the bank and she was supposed to keep it running.

One day she ordered new linens as the old ones were stained, had holes, and were generally too worn to be presentable and customers complained about their condition - they made the rooms seem unclean and unkempt. So against bank approval she ordered new linens.

I was surprised when she did so and asked how she got bank approval for the action. Her reply was:

I didn't. I'm going to be fired for this, but I'd rather be fired for acting responsibly and making good decisions than have a resume that showed I would compromise my reputation as an intelligent business person by following bad to orders to be ineffectual and irresponsible.
That conversation has always stuck with me as one of the best pieces of business advice I've received.

What is the best piece of business advice you have inadvertently received from someone that has stuck with you through the years - I'm not talking about the stuff you get in e-courses or see in here over and over. I'm talking about stuff that you just accidentally ran into in the course of a conversation with someone.

My Uncle was giving a presentation to 50 of our employees...

    One of the staff said:

"What do we do if we have finished all our tasks for the day?.."

    My Uncle replied:

"You better find more productive tasks! , or this business might not be here long enough to pay you a salary"

The member of staff was on the direct sales team.

    Peace

    Jay

p.s. I dunno why this was so profound for me, but it just made me think bigger...

For me, it would probably have to be a business partner I once had who told me: "The more people you talk to, the more chances for you success".

A very wise old lady once told me "If you don't know WHAT to do - be kind. Being kind is ALWAYS the right thing to do".

This might not seem applicable to Internet Marketing - but remember - Internet Marketing is all about building relationships with real people...

For me it was from a strange man that wandered up to me while I was selling beads I made on the street.

He told me he will teach me something that will make me rich.

    A knot.

    Yes, a simple slip knot.

In a thick accent he showed me how to tied two slip knots and make a necklace.

That day I went from a bead wholesaler selling beads for $1 to $3 to a jewelry seller selling the same $1 bead for $5 on a string with two slip knots.

That little lesson taught me a huge lesson about value added offers and upsells. I even learned other knots that made me even more money selling my necklaces for much much more.

I remember seeing one very talented knot tier who did beautiful work and made a lot of money with it. I convinced her to teach me her secrets, which included selling strategies, but she made me promise that if she did I would not sell on the same streets as her.

I was successful as a transient artist living on the streets and selling my wares which eventually helped me get off the streets but these same small lessons have made me even more successful in my current form of business.
