Help This Fool Set Up Subdomain Strategy

Hi Chaps and Chappets

I have a number of sites I want roll out (they are all ready and I am so excited).

Being a techno-failure

I know that I need to buy webspace that will enable me to put all the sites up as subdomains with domain names pointing at each one.

I just want some advice on how to do this.

Do I buy webspace from somone let Hostgator and register a general domain and then add my sites just pointing the domain name at a folder on this site?

Any help advice or just simple videos I can watch would help

Think I might be overworrying as this is probably so so simple ... in fact I bet I sound like a noooob

Ps yes for those who are wondering to date every single site I have put up (there are lots) have there own domain name and webspace ... the expensive way of doing it I know

I would suggest a single hosting account that is large enought to allow sub-domains and parked domains. With most modern control panels, it is very simple to 'park' fully qualified domain names on a sub-domain, so the actual account the content resides on is not evident, which is basically what you are describing.

I would look for a web host that uses cPanel (a personal preference) since I am aware that it allows all these things with supreme ease.

And domain names can be found cheap enough that, as long as your site is making more than $9.00 per year, it is not an exhorbanent cost of doing business.

It depends upon what types of sites you have, how database intensive are they?...etc..

You can have one webhosting accounting and use your .htaccess to redirect the domains. The downfall here is they all have the same IP.

I use a dedicated server to host all of my sites on. There is some cost but it allows me to host as many sites as I desire. Plus I have a couple of other people's sites that I host that help cover the costs.

If you have a bunch of websites with their own domain name then I would get the domains from someone like godaddy and point the name servers to your hostgator account. In your hostgator account cpanel you would click "add on domains" and add each website with its own url.

All you need is to register a domain name with a company, maybe like godaddy and then get a hosting package somewhere else. I tend to have 2 separate companies for this.

Most if not all reputable hosting companies will allow you to set up subdomains, usually unlimited but still depending on your package.

A typical sudomain would be like this, firstsubdomain.yourdomainname.com, secondsubdomain.yourdomainname.com and so on.

You have a choice on your subdomain name as you only need to register your original domain name.

One thing to watch out for is that the bandwidth and disk space in your hosting package is shared by all you subdomains with your main domain so if you plan to make many subdomains you may run out of bandwidth/disk space.

BTW, hosting companies usually uses Cpanel and you should have for your hosting account. From the Cpanel you'll be able to manage your account and add your subdomains.
