I am wondering which payment options are vital for running an e-commerce website. I am using woocommerce and right now the only useful option I can use is Paypal. But a lot of people don't have Paypal. Is it a must to add an ''paying with credit card''option? are there plug-ins for this? I've heard of stripe, is this useful?

thanks, Konrad

    Hi Konrad,

There's a lot of payment options out there. PayPal is great if your starting out and have low sales. Stripe is ok too but each will charge close to 3%.

You are right; many people don't have a PayPal account and don't want to be bothered by creating an account to order.

I believe WooCommerce works with the Authorize.Net and NMI gateway's which would allow you to have your own merchant account.

One of the challenges when you take credit cards is making sure you have a relationship with a group that can review your ordering system to make sure the terms of the sale are transparent.

One of the biggest challenges I see is high chargebacks which will result in the payment system being shut down. From my experience PayPal and Stripe can and will shut an account down quickly if the chargebacks get ugly.

When I help my clients we always make sure before the account is established that the ordering system, terms conditions have been reviewed and modified to minimize exposure.

    Hope this helps?

Wow, thanks for for warning me about the chargebacks, but I'm still not really sure what to do now?

Every merchant account regardless of who provides it will shut an account down if chargebacks get ugly

    Konrad,

Paypal gives you the option of paying by credit card. And yes, Stripe is good but there are also lots of other options.

Yes, paypal offers you to pay with paypal or straight out with a credit card.

Woocommerce plugin sets it all up for you.

Just enter your paypal info in the plugin, and mention on the pre payment page that they have an option when they go to make the final payment.

It is in the woocommerce settings/checkout. If you want to keep them on your site using paypal as your gateway for credit cards you will need paylpal pro. If you are just using payal off your website it will be a selection once they get to paypal.

Ah thanks for the clarification. I was confused by this because I could never find a credit card option on my website. I think I'll wait a bit since my budget is low at the moment, might grade up my paypal account in the future !

I wouldn't consider PayPal if I were doing huge numbers. You may need to open up a proper merchant account...

If you are just starting out I would stick with PayPal until you find you need something else however that may never happen, as has been said above, PayPal offers credit card payment without signing up so your pretty much covered.

Nowadays most of the people are using the PAYPAL, There are some country where there is no platform of Paypal, in this case beside the Paypal most of the people are using the SKRILL. You can use this skrill also if you want.

PayPal is widely used payment processors. For the credit card processing I would like to use 2checkout.

The only problems are the fees. My margins are quite small, the fees makes it extra worse.

There's a handful of considerations as well as options that will allow your business to accept credit cards online.
    1. Do you want a simple buy now button, or on site processing? This might affect your PCI compliance.
    2. A hosted payments page is common for merchants who don't wish to handle payment information.
    3. How much are you processing monthly? There could be a cost effective alternative comparatively speaking.
