Internet Marketing Made Me FAT or HELP! I'm a couch potato!

Yes, it's true. Internet Marketing has made me fat!

Let me start out by giving you a little back story, then I'll go into what I plan to do about it.

Due to circumstances beyond my control, I became an Internet Marketer in on May 16, 2008. I remember the exact day because on May 15, 2008 I was laid off from my job with absolutely no warning. I guess I should say I was laid off with no warning from my employer. I should have had plenty of warning if I had paying attention to the economy a little more closely, but that's neither here nor there.

The point is in one fell swoop I went from clearing almost $900 per week to the prospect of unemployment insurance, which would end up paying me $240 per week. You can hardly live on that. Believe me, I know.

That brings me to Internet Marketing. I actually got into Internet Marketing because I liked to play roulette and video poker. The very next day after I had lost my job I had been messing around online in one of the roulette forums I belonged to. I saw that he had banners and ads that led to online casino sites. I clicked on one. They happened to have a tiny banner at the bottom that said "Have a website? Make money with us!" I clicked on that and landed on their affiliate page. I guess you can say the rest is history.

I decided to set up an online forum just like the one I belonged to. I expected it to be hugely complicated and super difficult. It wasn't. Now, getting people to actually visit my site -- that was just a little more difficult.

Long story short, I failed miserably. However, I had caught the bug. I wanted to make money online. I wanted to live the "laptop lifestyle." And so I did. I can proudly say that today I make a comfortable living from my Internet Marketing business.

That brings me to the meat of the story. Making money from my living room has made me lazy and fat! I am 5' 7'' tall. My ideal weight is somewhere around 145 pounds, depending on which formula you use. Well, as of this morning I weigh 263 pounds! It's a problem, for sure, especially since there is a history of diabetes and high blood pressure in my family.

My saving grace is that I have always been a pretty healthy eater. I never drink soda, or "pop," depending on what part of the world you are from. I don't eat candy. I take vitamins and supplements. So why am I fat? It's because I don't exercise. I have gotten lazy because I can sit on the couch all day and still make plenty of money.

So, now that I have identified the problem, what do I plan to do about it? Well, I'm pretty sure one of the biggest problems for me is the fact that I no longer have to get up at a certain time and go to work. My former job required that I was always on my feet and walking all over resort grounds. I probably walked 3-5 miles every day and never even realized it.

My plan to beat the "laptop lifestyle syndrome" is simple. I am going to get out of the house and start doing some "offline" marketing.

I recently purchased everything I need to shoot some great video. I have a nice camera, microphones, voice recorder, etc. I am going to start by putting that stuff to good use.

I plan to set up a tourism blog that will focus on events, activities, and tourist attractions in the Phoenix Metro area. There are lots of great mountains that you can take day hikes on and not only get exercise but also enjoy some of the most scenic views in all of the southwestern US.

One of my plans to grow traffic and popularity will be to utilize my video equipment to actually get tourists involved, meaning that I will be speaking to local tourists about their experiences on the sites that I'm going to visit. These will make fantastic videos for my blog posts. What better way for folks to decide if they want to visit a landmark or event than watching video of it and hearing from others who have made the same trip?

I plan to print up business cards for the blog and hand those out not only to the folks who will be appearing in my videos, but also to others who are visiting tourist attractions while I'm there. As you can see, I have made it so that the entire success of this venture depends on me getting out there and physically letting others know about my blog. I'm sure I'll get some organic SEO traffic because I know how to do on-page SEO, but that will just be extra.

Now, the whole point of this venture is to MAKE me get up off the couch and get moving and exercising again. Like I said, my diet is fine. I'm actually a healthy eater. One lesson I've learned from this experience is that when you get older your metabolism slows down, and even if you eat right it's not enough if you don't exercise as well.

I decided to create this thread because I just know there are other marketers out there who are having this same problem. I hope I have inspired you all to GET MOVING and stop being lazy! Yes, I love Internet Marketing, but not enough to let it KILL me!

P.S. I would love to hear your thoughts and ideas for the blog!

I lived in Phoenix in 1988, loved it, and hiked up South Mountain and Camelback regularly.

I have a domain (only) that might interest you. I was going to use GetUpAndMoveNOW.com for some desktop software intended for those glued to their computer, reminding them every ten minutes or so to Get Up and Move NOW! Since I never got anywhere with that, the domain remains idle, and it could very well fit what you're considering.

Yes, South Mountain is breathtaking at the top. You can see all the way to downtown Phoenix and beyond on a clear day. That's one of the first places I plan to visit, possible tomorrow morning. I would love to be able to catch a sunrise up there. I've always thought that Arizona has some of the prettiest sunrises and sunsets in the country. Not to mention there are literally hundreds of great places to visit that are practically undiscovered. I was doing some research last night for a list of the first 10 places I want to visit and I couldn't believe how much I didn't know about the state I live in.

I want to do more of a tourist type site that focuses on some of the lesser known, but extremely fun activities. Obviously people know about all of the biggies like the Grand Canyon, Sedona, Lake Havasu, etc. I want to blog about activities that really define Arizona's history.

It's all new territory fo me because believe it or not I have never started a blog as a sheer hobby. I honestly don't care if this blog makes any money. This is strictly a hobby that's going to help me get my weight back down while improving my video, interview, and writing skills. If, down the line, the site gets popular enough and starts getting enough traffic I'll think about monetizing. There are endless options here. I could probably just throw up a few Adsense ads and call it a day.

Keep an eye out for roadrunners and for mountain lions up there, especially early in the morning.

Also, not sure if it's still the case, but visibility was far better looking south, compared to north, since the air pollution tended to hover in the valley.

Even though they're ancient, look up Reg Manning's books, such as What Is Arizona Really Like? I'm guessing a lot will still be relevant. I think that's how we originally found out about the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum and the Phoenix Zoo.

    Nicheblogger75,

I hope your plan works out for you and I really do appreciate your openness about this challenge you have.

Why don't you keep a weekly diary of your weight loss over time including pictures of yourself losing all your weight? Tell what you did, what you ate, how much you lost, and what exercises you did.

Such a story would be a wonderful product your could sell - with your own spin on it - as the successful weight loss plan for couch potato IMers. You will have a ready market right here when your product is finished! What overweight Warrior wouldn't like such a "personal" product from one of their brothers?

Good luck with your exercise routine and new business!

    Hahaha.

I've always been a chunky chunk, but there's hope man.

The best advice I can give you, is to get activity every single day.

So - find a cool place where you can go hiking. I like to hike, and when I'm alone, it helps me to brainstorm all sorts of stuff.

But take it from me - if you don't have a "spot" to go hiking that you love, it'll never work; you'll never do it. So step one is to find a cool place to go walking + hiking. (Any forests around you with hiking or walking trails?).

I agree. You need to have that special "spot" to get comfortable and familiar with. There are so many places to hike in Arizona you probably could never hike them all. I want to get into climbing the smaller mountains like Camelback, which I believe takes about 2-3 hours to get to the top and back. Of course, that is dependent on the skill level and physical fitness of the climber.

Going from memory now, South Mountain has a wider variety of trail intensities, plus there are the canals near Baseline which are, by definition, flat, so you can start there and work your way up (literally). If I recall right, Camelback is a great trail, but I seem to remember that it's a single trail, which doesn't give you a selection of different grades. Admittedly, both my memory and the trails may have changed over three decades.

I feel your pain. I went through the same thing a few years back.

While I've never been all that "fit", I did gain weight.

I kept a blog for a while - sort of my accountability platform. It helped. But it was still a struggle. So I simply started walking because nothing else I did was working (or should I say, I stuck with nothing).

Walking turned to jogging after about a year. 4 months after I started jogging I ran in a half marathon. Took me 2 hours and 26 minutes, but I did it. I felt great too. I also hired (after the half marathon) a personal trainer, which also helped.

So after a couple of years doing this, my arthritis in my knees started to feel worse and it was taking longer to recover from my weekly 10 mile runs. And I developed a bulge in a disk in my lower back. Not excruciating, but enough to make my life miserable when I tried to run.

So, I don't run anymore, but I do go for brisk walks. And when the weather is nice (I live in NY) I ride my bicycle - typically about 20 miles.

I - like you - have always been a pretty healthy eater. But I admit I do eat too much

At 51 I am starting to feel the age but overall I am healthy. I get a physical every year and always comes back A-OKAY.

Little things mean a lot. Start small and work your way to more physical things. If you try too much too fast, you'll give up.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Doing IM full time definitely makes it easy to pack on the pounds. I joined a cheap gym (Planet Fitness) and made it a routine to make a gym drop and food cooking an extended mid-day lunch break and started paying SOME attention to what I eat, as opposed to the zero attention I paid before and dropped 35 pounds. Still would like to lose some more but I feel much better already

That's excellent! I would love to lose 35 pounds. The fact is I need to lose much more than that. As of this morning I am 113 pounds overweight. This is not going to be an easy task. The worse part is that I had no idea that my weight had gotten that out of control. It seems like an almost impossible task right now, and I'm doing everything I can not to get discouraged.

I know it's something I have to do for my health, though. I had my yearly physical about a month or so ago and my doctor told me I needed to start losing weight as soon as possible. My grandmother had diabetes and my father was diagnosed with it at age 50. I'll be 41 next month, so you can see how this is kind of urgent for me.

True, but also not impossible. Figure out what amount of daily change works for you. For example, 700 calories/day by increasing cardio exercise and reducing food intake would yield an average weight loss of 0.2 pounds/day, or 6lb/mo. That'd mean you could do it in just over a year and a half. 500 cal/day is 1lb/wk, so it'd take a bit over two years. Still reasonable.

      • Hey man, it's actually your diet that's the problem, (not lack of exercise) You need to lower your daily caloric intake. It doesn't matter if you're eating healthy, overeating is the main culprit for weight gain.

I'm not trying to be an ass, I was in a similar position to you. I was 210lbs at 5'9" and I dropped 40lbs by only consuming 1,800 calories/day. I did that with very little exercise.

Don't get me wrong exercise is great, but the key to weight loss comes from your diet. 'Abs are made in the kitchen, not the gym'

Two weeks ago I would have agreed with you, but I have recently changed my diet. I eat a lot of green leafy vegetables and fish now. One of my favorite meals to make is salmon, spinach, and cold green bean salad. I have to say I have come a long way in my diet. I never really ate unhealthy, but like you mentioned, I ate too much.

My diet still needs work, don't get me wrong. Right now I am hovering around 1200-1300 calories per day. I know the average for men is supposed to be 2000-2400 calories per day, but that's way too much for an inactive person. I was probably right around that mark, but the fact that I wasn't very active really played a part in this I think. It's time to change that and get active as well as monitor my diet.

One thing that is really shocking is that the more I learn about nutrition, the more I start to understand just how bad American eating habits are. It's no wonder more than 50% of all US citizens are overweight. This is really a very serious problem. I think if the average person actually knew how much sugar they were taking in every day they would be shocked.

My Christmas present to myself was a Fitbit and I was disappointed (but not surprised) to see that on an average day I probably only walk about 3000-4000 steps. And I suspect that the Fitbit isn't entirely accurate and may be over generous in its estimation. For the New Year I intend to make that 10,000 steps per day. And of course cut out the junk food, of which I eat alot while I'm seated most of the day. To track that I've started using MyFitnessPal app on my phone.

I do eventually want to start a proper exercise program but after being sedentary for so long I think walking the 10,000 steps and eating healthier will make a big difference.
It's not easy to get up and get going again. I'm still kind of shocked at how lazy this business can make you. Thing of it is, you get into this business to have more free time, make more money, travel, etc. It's pretty ironic that I'm sitting here talking about how lazy I got and how I ended up doing less! It should have been the other way around. Well, I guess if life was easy everyone would be winning.
