You can become an authority by acquiring lots of experience and being over the top. Only reading the ebooks and going through the cources won't make you an authority, but if you learn how to implement everything at its best to solve people's problems (finding the "gold nugget" niches in your case) and do it better than other niche experts, then you will become an authority. So the ebooks and cources are fundamental, but knowing how to implement this knowledge better that others will make you an authority.

Hi Chia, interesting question and one I believe more marketers should be asking.

You get a lot of marketers entering niches believing they can pick up the required skills and knowledge as they go and wonder why the ventures fails.

The type of business you are looking to create will determine the level of knowledge you need to acquire before you begin.

As an example, if you were to create an authority site which is solely monetized using ads such as Adsense or Taboo then this type of work can be outsourced with less knowledge than if you were to start up a product creation business where you would be creating an delivering information you wish to sell to your visitors.

In both cases I would highly recommend you read, learn and then implement before you start to build a build within a niche.

In another thread you are asking whether to choose insomnia or camping as a niche.

Good example - you could learn enough about insomnia by reading and be able to parrot what you've read at least.

With a hobby like camping you need hands on experience to be an authority.

        sincere thanks kay,

I would like to know, so from your recommendation, if I do not have prior knowledge or experience:

        1. camping niche targeting US camper is hard to enter as I do not have the know hows of camping.

        2. insomnia niche is easy to enter, as I can glean the info from books (bought from book depository)

        do you agree with me??

        thanks once more

Not quite - insomnia niche is not "easy" - but not impossible to learn about it through reading. Insomnia is the same condition no matter where you live - inability fo sleep. A google search for "insomnia" yields 49,000,000 results so there is quite a bit of competition.

Camping varies from country to country - as do the camping areas, type of vehicles, accessories, etc. It's a niche you need to experience. A google search of "camping" yields 563,000,000 results. If you want to compete in a field like that - you have to know what you are talking about!

None of the above are details you need to worry about - just trying to explain the general concept.

It's a start but I don't think anyone becomes known as an authority over night.

Definitely read and absorb the knowledge. Then take action by implementing it or sharing what you've learned for free or for a tiny fee.

By doing this you're getting your name out there and showing you have knowledge in the field.

The definition of an authority in the context of a niche is simply knowing more about something than your target market.

Using your camping or insomnia example. They're not niches, they're markets. Big difference. Check out the links below to get more clarity.

A Niche is Not a Market

The Dangers of Confusing a Niche with a Market

Specialize in one area (niche) concerning those markets rather than the whole market. That doesn't take as long and will help you stand out and be in demand sooner. Plus, you'll have less competition.

      For example,

Instead of camping - a niche would be camping clothing, cooking equipment, camping safety, best places to camp, tents, boots, safety gear, etc.

Instead of insomnia - a niche would be ... best foods to fight insomnia, a list of insomnia experts, best books on insomnia, foods that cause insomnia, natural foods that fight insomnia, sleep wear, best bedding, pillows, drinks, etc.

Those are examples off the top of my head. You could even drill down further into micro niches from the suggestions above.
