Web designer vs. Web developer for a project I may have in mind...

Hello...

I've been thinking about this idea for a website (similar to E-lance.com, but not quite) and I was wondering if I should hire a web designer or web developer. Are they pretty much one of the same, or is there a big difference between the two?

Also (and this may be a long shot), but are there WYSIWIG website programs that will allow you to create something similar to E-lance.com?

    You need to hire both type of persons.
    Here is the difference: Web designer take care of the out look and user experience of the website on the other hand web developer do actual coding and develop the site.

    Web designers are similar to Architecture engr. and Web developers are similar to Civil engr. Hope you got the point.

      Thanks. So, who would I hire first? The web developer or the web designer? I'm guessing after one person is finished with his/her end of the project, I then have to go find the other person (designer or developer)... is that correct?

    First hire Web designer and then Web developer. But you may need both of them at the same time during the process.

    Thats a tall order to build. I'm going to recommend you pass on getting the web designer first and get a web developer -someone who can program more than html css and front side Javascript

    Figure out how to get the site to work the way you want and the design will follow

    I'm with Mike. A developer is going to give the designer the framework to build onto.

    Some fixes, features, tweaks, and bugs require messing with a large portion of code -- that could end up throwing the design out of whack.

    If that happens, you'll have a pissed off developer, and designer.

    Do the major work first, make sure it works, then make it pretty.

    Funny I feel the exact opposite about who to hire first because how will the developer know what to make the site do and what to put where if the designer hasn't come up with what to put where on the page and what you want it to do.

      With CSS, that doesn't matter at all; that's the entire point.

      You definitely want to get your site working first before making it pretty. Having color-coordinated drapes doesn't help one bit if your basement can't support the weight of your house.

      The project owner (OP in this case) knows what they want the site to do.

      They tell the developer what they want it to do, then the developer figures out creative solutions to make that happen.

      Once all the features are included in the site, the designer can make it pretty.

      Here's an example.

      If I want to create Facebook, I'm going to hire the developer to make sure people can register, friend people, click like, get a news feed, see ads, etc.

      Then, once the site does what I want it to do, I'm going to go to a designer with my branding ideas and let them go to work.

      HTML and CSS (front end design) are a lot easier to manipulate than PHP and SQL (back end development).

      The ideal situation is a pow-wow between owner, developer, and designer, with a budget in mind and ideas on paper.

    You will need to collaborate with both, and let them know that they are working for YOU now. So they will have to communicate with each other back and forth to give you the Elance feel that you're looking for. But let the web developer lay the blueprint for it first, then work with your web designer to pull it all together.
