The principles of an effective logo remain the same regardless of what date it is. Just stick to the basics and you'll be fine.

Your logo should be simple, meaning it'll translate nicely when simplified to one color and embroidered onto a shirt, and can still be recognizable when scaled to small sizes.

It should be relevant and suggest your product's idea as opposed to literally depicting it.

And your logo should also be timeless. I know flat design is all the rage right now, but glossy buttons used to be all the rage back in the web 2.0 days, and now it just looks outdated. Avoid trends. If you intend to be around for a while, your logo should stand the test of time.

Why is an internet marketing logo any different from a normal logo?
    Signature
Forbes-Listed: "Ten Consultants Who Avoid the Bullsh*t"
American Business Awards: Named one of their "Marketers of the Year"
Plus: A Bunch of Other Awards and Media Placements
    Whatever.

No guidelines. In fact no logo is even a great idea. Why do you *need* a logo? And 2016 isn't the return of Christ. You can use the same logo from 10 years ago and still be killing it.

If you change logo frequently, you will confuse your target consumers and you it's harder for you to build a brand that way.

Famous logos are simple, elegant, not busy to look at... and also symmetrical.
Most people found things attractive that are symmetrical.
