I've noticed a few new twists (or new to me anyway) on getting keyword rich .com domains lately. If you're going after the KW "Blue Widgets", chance are bluewidgets.com is taken, maybe you can get a .net or .org. CHance are blue-widgets.com is taken too, but here are 2 trends I've noticed:

bluewidgetsbluewidgets.com

and blue--widgets.com

interesting. Anyone have any insight into whether or not this is an effective alternative for Google /SEO purposes in terms of ranking for a keyword?

I hadn't seen this anywhere yet, but it bears looking into.

I wonder if the search engines would give double weighting to a domain name that repeats the keywords twice... triple weight for repeating three times? Or will they penalize it for keyword spamming?

Interesting article. Thanks! Yeah, you gotta figure Google would catch on to double-stuffed keyword domains pretty quickly as well.

It would certainly seem to me that keyword rich domains can have a very positive effect on search engine rankings but domain name are a relatively minor factor compared with more difficult factors such as link popularity...

Thsi is great information as I do have some domains with dashs and was thinking of getting more

I think using double words and dashes would be a form of spamming, and Google can easily categorize this as spam and penalize websites which do these type of things. It's best to stay away from this type of stuff and just come up with unique domain names which capture the essence of the website content!

      I truely believe in that,

Just get your backlinks right and get your content right and i guess you'll rank fine in google

What I have found is that it is probably best not to use dashes in your domain name. And you should try your best to get .com instead of .net or .info., because you might decide to sell the domain later. The .com is much more valuable than the others.
And don't forget to use your "relevant" master keyword in your domain name.

I've always found it helpful to put a qualifier in there to get a good .com that isn't already taken. For example, try mybluewidgets.com or bestbluewidgets.com. That kind of thing. You'll still get the SEO bang for having your keyword in there, and if you check a lot of variations, you can often find something that even looks and reads nice.
