Managing multiple niches with one personality

How can you manage creating products for multiple unrelated niches and still maintain credibility using your own author name without resorting to using pen names instead for some of the weird ones? Is it possible?

I mean how reputable can you be if you start to be well known as IM guru AND basket weaving specialist AND weight loss pro AND beekeeping ninja... etc... ??

    Hi,

Good question. The only person I know of for sure who does this is Kevin Tredeau. He just does it. Those who trust him do so and keep on buying his products and those who think he is a scam artist keep on buying his products to see what he is up to. Also I bet many of the latter kind buy his books saying to themselves, "What if THIS is the one?"

He has credibility with a lot of people and has lost it with a lot of people and he probably doesn't care one way or the other.

  • I think it is best to use a different name for each niche. For IM, I will use my real name, as well as one or two other small niches. For everything else, I use pen names.

Thanks for the input. I guess maybe it really depends on which niche might eventually result in you having to show face for it in some form of mentor role.

I guess ya never know... what happens if you suddenly rocket to the top of the basket weaving social elite under a pen name and someone wants you to do a bazillion dollars in training seminars?

I struggle with this question, too. Haven't figured out the answer yet. My niche sites are wildly unrelated, simply because they're things I'm interested in.

And, the truth is, I really DO know a lot of totally random stuff. It's a running joke among my friends...

So far, I just sort of focus on quality content and avoid using "name recognition".

The whole "pen name" thing just doesn't feel right to me. I know that other Big Names have, and do, go that route. I'm not knocking it. To each his/her own. But I haven't felt comfortable with that.

Thomas Jefferson was an architect, an archaeologist, an author, an inventor, a statesman and a wine connoisseur.

Benjamin Franklin was an author, an inventor, a printer, a scientist and a statesman.

Leonardo da Vinci was an artist, an inventor, a mathematician, a musician, a scientist and a writer.

Isaac Newton, Galileo, Aristotle were also accomplished in multiple fields.

There is even a term for such a person: polymath.

If you have the knowledge to back it up, I don't see a problem with being reputable.

Dan's content is irregularly read by handfuls of people. Join the elite few by reading his blog: dcrBlogs.com, following him on Twitter: dcrTweets.com or reading his fiction: dcrWrites.com but NOT by Clicking Here!

Dan also writes content for hire, but you can't afford him anyway.

I'm using one name for everything right now, but they are all related closely enough, OR they are things I'm comfortable with. For example if you were an expert in something weird and also "fitness", is that really uncommon? People have more than one hobby. And we are entrepreneurs.

Of course but i'm just thinking ahead as to how you would eventually tie it all in together at some point at some sort of upper level.

"If you liked my IM course maybe you'll like my course in basket weaving too!"

I don't know. Maybe i'm just over thinking it...

        It's called a "publishing company".

Which is kinda how I got around it, Michael. My niche sites are all registered under (Company) Publishing.

But every once in a while, I wonder if I need an "author" personna.

I don't let it keep me up at night, tho'

Personally.. I use my real name (Marc Milburn) for all of my internet marketing activities. Everything else I use a pen name however it always falls under Milburn Marketing - although the only place that gets seen is at the "buying" stage.

It's part of the fun sometimes!!

If you look at some of the top authors on Ezine articles, lots of them have articles on multiple topics, but under one name.

    Your question is very intriguing
I mean how reputable can you be
That really depends how "into" the niche you are, the people in your niche can tell straight away if you're not, so you better be doing your research very well, the better your research the easier to convert because more people will be convinced you are the real thing. "reputable" Reputation is not something you can get easily as many people trying to sell stuff think

For example I myself love basketball, I read about it all the time I watch it all the time. If someone wrote about basketball trying to sell me the latest 'how to jump higher' products, I would know straight away if they are actually "into" basketball or not because of things like: incorrect termanology, common knowledge basketball people know, as well as other things.

For a person with an interest in something it's every easy for them to spot the real thing or not, think about that for your own interests.

how reputable can you be = how much knowledge of the niche you have = how sincere you are = how many sales you can get

I use pen names for each different niche. If I have several sites in one niche, that niche uses one pen name, and another niche will use a different pen name. I don't think that Vladimir Petrovski would be very good at selling anything from a taco site, so someone named Pedro Sanchez might be the persona over there. Nor do I think that Michael Roberts would know a whole lot about selling woman's products, so Sara Smith might be selling those.

Some people don't mind using their own names for everything, but I only use mine for my MMO sites, so that I can at least be myself there. I do have a company name that I use, and most of my personas fall under that company.

So you could essentially create a company, even register it on a local level, and just use different authors, pen names, entities?
