What's Been a Waste Of Your Time and Investment?

I know the traditional posts are always asking, "what's working for you now"...
but as it's a new year... we often reevaluate the past year and hopefully do some clean up work in our marketing and work activities.

So what are you cutting out this year? Did you discover something that was a total waste of your time -- or that a certain activity is no longer achieving worthy results?

I used to spend way too much time on Youtube. Also, I don't drink Alcohol anymore! I used to go party with friends every weekend but I don't go anymore. I try to spend my time wisely by adding as much value as possible in my life and the life of others. I started to volunteer in an organism here in Montreal that helps homeless people instead of going out. I feel like I make an impact and for some reason it makes me more productive in my day to day life because i'm more grateful for what I have!

I like that you're making changes in your life and changing your focus to help others.

I've definitely come to see that blogging should not be my main focus. It can be a good useful tool. but not where I should pour all my energy into.

I've had both experiences - where blogging has been productive and revenue producing, like my first blog where I made 5 figures in 4 weeks. Other times, it's been a waste of time and energy.

The good has always been where I had a clear CTA and knew exactly what I wanted the reader to do. e.g. Click here and buy this Clickbank product that's closely related to this blog post. Knew the keywords I wanted to rank for, knew the competition, knew what to write to covert them into buyers.

The bad has always been where I didn't really have a clear goal. Instead, it was just about sharing knowledge. Heart and soul into blog post. While people shared and bookmarked the page, it didn't really have what I consider to be meaningful results, although it builds goodwill.

An example of the good is HubSpot. e.g. Personalize the Online Experience for Prospective Students. It has clear CTA's throughout that are custom for the blog post topic. Not just vague "Click here to subscribe and learn online marketing".

I agree that publishing is more profitable than blogging, and I'll also chalk it up as a waste.

There are of course, methods to salvage blogging. (I'm about to go off topic lol).

To make blogging worthwhile, here are some tips.

    # 1 - Make your blogs short. I'm so sick of the gurus saying that your blog posts have to be 1,500 words long. Bah! If that's the case, then blogging is a chore, and not worthwhile, and truly a waste of time.

    # 2 - Make your blog posts PROMOTE something. If you don't promote something, it's a waste of time.

    # 3 - Join a blog tribe, or create one. This allows others to share your content with the click of a button.

    # 4 - Repurpose your blog posts! Turn them into books, and, for heaven's sake, promote it to your list! (Which is why rule # 2 is no joke).

    # 5 - Spend more time promoting your blog than you do writing it.

//end rant, I'm sure I'm forgetting other stuff.

    PPS:

Wasting time on social media is probably a bigger waste, and checking email + stats 5,000 times per day is truly time-sucking and addicting.

EXACTLY right! Most of us get so caught up in that. It's time to slap some sense into ourselves and get back to work!

Buying things early on that I thought were the magic bullet to success.

Eg. investing thousands in Facebook ads...right before advanced targeting came out. D'oh! Talk about throwing mud at the wall and hoping something stuck.

Eg. investing thousands in a LinkedIn program, without being committed to figuring it out...staying the course until I made it work. Also being turned off by the 'spam' perception component--not being clear on what I was getting into and why.

You think you're buying your way into the next level of success, but it's not. It's just another set of problems. Are you willing to commit to solving them?

Anything you're not going to actually commit to and use is a waste of money.

And many, many things people think are "necessary" for business are not.

I think you've nailed it there! I've been guilty of buying that shiny new object and then realizing I wasn't that committed to making it work.

So let's say NO this year to buying shiny objects and investing MORE into what we already have and making it work!

      Back to simplicity!

you see...this is one of the keys right here...

Stop everything (including buying courses and tools), that does not produce: meaningful relationships and profit.

Most of us know overnight success is a pipe dream, but still do the things that hold us back from our own success.

I spent an easy $100k+ over 18 years, and sure I have had successes, but in the end my whole life had to be destroyed to the ground for me to actually learn how to win this game long term.

Learn from my mistakes in the previous paragraph; please.

      Best,

      ~Hodge

PS: Productivity tip...take your tasks that suck the most of your time, that you also hate or procrastinate on, and move them to the top of your to-do list...it's all downhill from there.

I was pumped about the all-keyword domain I bought and thought that spinning some reviews was my road to riches. While I was completely wrong, I learned a ton. (while I was never going to get better serps than the big boys, i could have done a modicum of commerce, had I had some links, done some ppc, and written more).

Thanks for sharing that great point!

We're sometimes gullible to believe marketers who tell us the road to riches is as simple as spinning some content and choosing a good few keywords and we can conquer ANY niche, etc. Fact is, in certain markets there ARE those big giants to compete against... so it's going to take a BIGGER battle plan than slapping up some reviews or spun content.

Too much time reading emails and not enough time doing things that will move things along.

I've been working on pruning the number of email lists I'm on. I'm not saying that they don't have value for someone, just not enough for me to read every email when often one in ten has something I'm happy I didn't miss. Reading the other nine is time gone forever.

Even the lists I'm happy to remain on, I tend to skim before spending time reading. In particular, I tend to be more aggressive with the delete button when I get obvious affiliate pitches. "My good friend, X, just released..." gets a quick glance at the title before being added to the trash folder. Same for webinar invites.

And before someone replies with that vintage whine about "marketers bitching about marketing", I'm not. It's just part of the resolution to waste less time looking at shiny objects and worrying about missing something and more time taking care of business.

Yes, I understand that! I've been trying to do that as well. It's so easy to waste an hour away before you know it -- sadly, that time could have been put to good use doing something for your business that would earn you more money.

*When I come across an article or content that really seems worth my time I'll save it to "Pocket" and then read it on my phone later while traveling.

          1) Spending too much time checking and responding to emails.

          2) Buying too many courses.

          3) Spending too much time on Research (research is very important but you need to draw the line somewhere).

          4) Pursuing business models that take up too much of my time.

#3 - I agree. Research is very necessary. At some point you do have to draw the line... I think this is where "Perfectionism" can become a waste of our time. We need to set a deadline to finish a project and get it done in a reasonable time frame.

#4 - I do try to evaluate VERY carefully before pursuing other business models. Most of mine need to be under the passive income form because I still homeschool my sons and I want to keep as much time free as possible.

Uh... you should see my hard-drive.

But, I can say that I'm finally improving in this area. I try to take some personal time on Fridays for catching up on podcasts or videos for extra learning... during the work week I try to kick myself into high gear to be more productive and get my main priorities completed. Content creation, editing, image designs and product publishign are my ACTION words.

I make myself EARN some "Friday Freedom" as a reward.

99% of people do not realise how the multimillionaires do it.

They buy things, then they TAKE MASSIVE ACTION and SELL THINGS.

If you get caught up in the BUY BUY BUY [and I will do it later] type routine, be prepared to make CHIT money! $0.

I went from $0 to over $500 a day fast, when I stop buying crap, and actually did stuff. Excercises like....

      - build a list
      - build great content
      - help people
      - study what successful people do
      - take a notepad and write down my ideas
      - write ways on how to TAKE ACTION

Then I actually went out and took action.

Sure you can buy stuff, heck, I would even encourage it, but if you are buying stuff to just look at, and are one of those guys that DO NOTHING, and SAY..... "CHIT! I will do all this stuff later!"

Then you are not ready to get in on this IM game.

Actions breed results, so if there has been anything I can say, that has brought in HUGE REWARDS for me in 2015, it was to invest time in myself, and spend the hours creating content, and then marketing that content.

So you should not be wasting time reading this post, go away and do something, that will actually get you closer to getting to your goals.

Say to yourself....SELF "I want to make $5000 USD and month!" and then say....ok
how am I going to do that.

Even if you have a full time job, wake up earlier and spend time, buying a domain, setting up 1 or 2 page websites. Get in and build a nice optin page, or something like that. and Get started on building your list.

Those 4 things I have told you above, and actions have been taking by a few warriors in here, that have bought in $XX,XXX per month. Yes, well ok, its a little more complex than having a website, and building a list, you need traffic, but what I am saying is do 1 little thing each day, to get you closer to your goals!!!

So if you are one of those people who just keep buying ebooks, and reading them, stop and actually take action on one of them, the results can be mindbending if done properly.

I have bought in $6,000 per month from a 2 page website. And that takes practically 1-2 days to set up. Then spend my time driving traffic using social, twitter, g+, content, paid traffic.

i guess my overall point is, if you are NOT DOING, do not expect to be GETTING DOLLARS sitting in your account when you wake up in the morning.

      Simple as that!

Stop backlinking, and work on the real products. This way you earn money the fastest. Backlinking don't make you money. Use fully automated software like GSA SER, FCS Networker to rank your keywords.

Yes! I think this starts when we write out our main priorities -- place them at the very top (the money maker activities)... and squash the little time wasters that are settled on the bottom... outsource those or automate what we can.

      I've been guilty too!

Fact is, we've often been given the information we need to succeed, but we don't follow through... Rather than get busy implementing something, we turn around and look for something easier and better. We run in circles like those hamsters and will never be productive until we stop running mindlessly.

I think for me, at the beginning it was too much reading and not enough action.
I really support and think people should do research and read but I think there is a point there where you need to take action. You learn so much more from taking action compared to just reading.

So far for me, blogging and video marketing has always been something that works wonders. I use a blog to build relationships mostly. I still SEO optimize the posts but I don't focus too much off page, I just let my community do it for me naturally i.e. comments and shares. My real money maker is with youtube SEO. Here, I focus on ranking my videos, because videos rank way easier and faster compared to blogs. It's because Google owns YouTube so they prioritize content from there. Anyways, I use YouTube as a bridge for my funnel. 2-3 min videos --> capture page --> sales funnel. I love it because it takes a life of it's own in terms of consistent traffic, lead generation and even conversions.

That's one thing that I'm certainly "keeping" this year and implementing more of -- that is, YouTube. I, too, find it a perfect fit with online marketing and generating qualified leads.

      Here is a trick,

stop playing around on FB and learn how to target, study and advertise to your intended audience.

If you do this, and stop screwing around, you will realize that advertisng on FB with lots of testing, its actually DIRT CHEAP, and very very targeted, and easy to get sales, if you do this right!!!

looking at how boring your friends lives is, is not building a business. Right now in 2016, i predict that there is going to be HUGE REWARDS, to people who advertise on FACEBOOK.

Its cheap, fun, and done right, your average ROI% on investments, can be quite large, especially if you advertise to smaller targeted groups. That is the secret!

Exactly. In a way, it's just like sex.

You can read, watch, study as much as you want, but nothing prepares you for the real thing. And once the cherry is popped, you never look at the subject the same way again.

The day after Halloween I made a commitment to cut out ALL News Surfing ( mainly Yahoo News) and also
    Facebook ( non business).

I have ABSOLUTELY succeeded in going Cold Turkey with both of them

In my opinion FB is the biggest Time Suck.

Its amazing how people let this medium rule their lives.
For many, FB is an addiction. Very unhealthy.

Iam glad I kicked it. I do have some Fan Pages but those are strictly for Posting my Business related dealings.
    That's it

I'm LOVING all these answers because they nail the EXACT things that I've decided are a complete waste of time: traffic exchanges (tried that for just a very short while when I first started internet marketing years ago), social media chatting, and too much reading and NOT taking action.

I plan to eliminate staring at my computer screen and start keeping my work flow moving forward. I spent a couple of hours this last weekend creating a info product planner that will allow me to place my priorities in the right order, while keeping a mix of a little blogging and videos and putting my email subcribers as top priority -- and cutting out more social media wandering. Once I get my planner polished and perfected (after testing it out) I plan to share it with others.

Thanks everyone for all your comments!

Roughly 5 years ago I bought an eBook for about 30€ on making money online. It was teaching barely anything else than some HTML-skills and how Google Adsense works. Well. Luckily I achieved fast progress anyway. Also anything about making a dime without growing one's own business was a complete waste.

All those seven dollar courses - yes seven. For some reason... that number is a magnet for cow manure. BS artists telling you how to make money. Hey, I don't know the reason. Still, they are usually spam or scam. Also, what is worse... they suck your time, and you can also make more money. However, time is something none of us can create, but we all consume.

Here is a very short list:
    • $7 courses
    • 99 cent e-books on spamazon
    • any of the many get rich click scams

I sort of agree... because there is a lot of rehashed stuff out there being sold for a quick buck.

However, I have actually grabbed some valuable content at $7 from some trustworthy marketers.... but, you have to realize that this is part of their sales funnel... and I'm sure they would like you to buy more of their products in the future. There's not anything necessarily wrong with that -- it works for them to build qualified leads who are not just looking for another "freebie."

The downside it that it's hard to decipher on the internet between what's fluff and what's not. It can certainly be a waste of time and lots of money buying them all to find out. It's better to find a good mentor who you feel really wants to help you, then invest in them when you've seen proof that they know what they're talking about and that they truly want to help their subscribers / customers.

As long as you sell valuable and helpful content to your customers, I don't see anything bad here with this, honestly. If you managed to produce a proper offer for people to actually consider with truthful information, then where's the downside for anybody involved? I only see win-win.

I've wasted a lot of money on tools I don't really use. Leadpages being the main one. It's a fantastic service, but I rarely use it as I prefer to code everything myself. Ugly always performs better for me!

I give it it's plaudits and it's a product I recommend for certain people but I'm throwing money away not using it. Numerous outsourcing websites I no longer use, few other membership sites I've never used like safe-swaps for example... I really should have a tidy up with these things

Moral of the story: Don't buy stuff you don't need! Simple!

In terms of time, I wasted a lot of time when I started out by trying to do things the "easy way" and by cutting corners. TRUST ME, that doesn't work. If you're gonna do something, do it properly!

Half assed effort = half assed results (at best).

      Cheers,

You've pinpointed a definite waste on some "investments" of our money. There's a TON of software, memberships and services that are pushed as a "must-have" -- but an online business can be run with very little extras.

Each individual needs to determine if they really need that new item and if it will be something they will actually use often. If it wasn't something you were already looking for, then more an likely it isn't something you really need.

Marketers know how to create that "excitement' about their new shiny product. Some of them are really great products... but are they a true "must-have" for our own situation --- this is what we need to determine. It's eating into projects when we keep buying the next new thing.

"Moral of the story: Don't buy stuff you don't need! Simple!"

I wish it were so simple. There are a lot of things that just jump out at you that you just have to see to believe. The disappointments outweigh the surprises, but at least there have been some surprises.

Many of my investments over the years were in tools that I didn't know I didn't need and, to be somewhat positive about it, they taught me that I could do some of these things myself.

I suppose you could make the argument that you can learn something for the "bad" investments, if it's merely that you won't have to make that mistake again.

At this moment, I'd have to say that some of the automatic social media posters have been a waste of my time. Some are better than others but, there has been little reward for me in many instances and the constant need to update credentials is extremely annoying.

I wish I could have back all the cash I've wasted over the years in IM products. Some were worth it...some were not.

What I'm learning is to become a minimalist in my home business. If it can truly save me time, then it might be worth it. I don't need what every other marketer is using if I'm already running things just fine.

Fancy new software and info products aren't always the GREAT deal that we think them to be. If it's something you're already looking for...then consider it. For instance, if you're needing some accounting software to track your income and expenses and then a very handy accounting software is launched... then it might be worth the investment.

Yes, there's a ton of automating software for social media and blogging...but the question boils down to "Do they yield results!?!"

Wasting time on Youtube, scrolling Facebook posts. Instead of focusing on SEO, social media marketing.

Wasting too much time putting my mind on competitors, sometimes make me feel annoying but not creating value, it really damages my passion and energy.

I think a better way is to think about how to improve or be creative to the same topic and taking actions so to focus on self-growing and be productive.

Very good point! We need to be aware of what our competitors are offering their customers... but fretting away and constantly monitoring what they're doing does NOT do our own home business a bit of good. And like you wisely pointed out... it damages your passion and drains away your energy!
