Software as a way to promote affiliate products

I just had a wicked idea today that is probably NOT new, but the specific idea and implementation just seems good enough to me that I should act on it (by outsourcing most of it).

The idea is to create a specific piece of software to help someone accomplish a certain goal. I won't reveal the idea, niche, etc, but you can probably apply this same concept to many different markets. The software would run on a person's computer and prompt them to take specific, actionable steps right then and there, and then get back to what they were doing (work-wise). It would be ideal for people who WANT to reach the goal that I have in mind, but who are otherwise stuck at a computer and can't take long breaks to go take action for a long period of time.

So the software would be easy enough.
Then I guess there are software directories where I'd submit it
There is also social media for more traffic.

Then I would have the software main view prominently advertise an affiliate link such as "For more great information on how to accomplish xyz click here".

Has anyone here done this? Any "rules" on how to do a good job with the software, where to submit, etc?

I think it should cost $100 to have such software created. I say this because I remember someone writing about a piece of "broken typewriter" software that cost $50 on elance to have produced. It was a notepad where the delete key did not work. So you couldn't edit your work. Suitable for those who wanted to be forced to write and write, not edit. Pretty simple.

So I'm thinking to outsource all of this:

1) Software $100
2) Graphics for software and website $50 (variations of same)
3) Manual submission to directories by someone $50
4) Setup basic website promoting affiliate product $50
TOTAL $250 to do this business idea. Peanuts.

Thoughts?

Well...not sure how much you know about software development. I am a software dveloper. Just because one piece of software was created for 100 dollars doesn't mean that all the other softwares could also be created for the same price. Even a little bit of change could make drammatic price difference.

jkiley - yeah, I know what you mean. It was a bad comparison. But I know enough about pseudo-code to understand how my software could be coded. I understand the algorithms that would be used. Maybe $200 max for this. Certainly no more than a day of work given the appropriate up-front documentation of how the program should function.

Let's skip the debate about cost because I know with certainty that other marketers have created interesting software programs for *dirt cheap* ... so back to the discussion on how to best monetize on this and execute on it. Any thoughts from people? I know others have done this in various niches. I'm just thinking of exploring it now.

Free software is just a slightly more complex method of doing marketing than an free PDF document loaded with affiliate promotions. It's more differentiated.

Free software can work great when it's something that people need to use often. As for where to submit, submit it where your market hangs out

If it's IM related, put a link in your sig or create a thread about how it solves problem X. And I doubt you'll get much done for $100, but 200-300 is more likely, depending on who you get to program it.

Yeah, good point - putting a link in a signature on a niche-related forum would be fantastic. Then you could hire someone on elance to make intelligent and helpful posts on the forum to leave a trail of links back to your free software.
