Are there any business models involving making money from a free membership website business model? Wondering if anyone has experience with such a business model.

    Mailing list, selling ad space, affiliate links... If it's not a forum why make it a membership site if it's free?

    I was just curious because I've learned so much from this site by asking. I learn more from this site then going to college lol

    I've been surprised at some of the methods people have used to make money online so I would've have been surprise if someone recommend a method I hadn't thought of to test.

    You could always offer your product for free and then offer an upgrade. This business model works very well.

    One of the best methods would be via email , now this used to be a good way about 15 months ago but things have changed but if you want to try here is how you do it.

    1 Get a domain like I.E. mymembership.com/net/info
    2 set up a squeeze page ( you need this for the email addresses )
    3 have some content I.E E-book , articles , what ever you are going to use
    best part about the E-book is that you can offer the chapters as a once a week for the membership site via email.
    4 Auto res ponder free one list wire or paid get response

    5 The set up , now as a person signs up they get the first week and then set it up for how many weeks you want to have this rule of thumb set up for three months / so that every week/month they get some content and during this do a blast for some affiliate product so deepens on the amount of members .

    This was a conversion I used to use 300-150-75= 60 sales , now this was the old way so you are going to have to look at the traffic you get and from where.

    And remember Free= tier kickers

    Inside the site, you could have:

    > products/services for sale

    > advertisements for affiliate products for sale elsewhere

    > drivers to a 1-on-1 call to assess needs

    > feedback forms asking what the visitors believe they need, and sell the results to them

    > signup form for email series promoting product(s) outside the site.

    Those are just my initial ideas.

    The key is you have someone who has stuck up their hand and said, "Yes, I'm interested in this" (whatever they're getting from your free offer.) Now that they've had a chance to see what value your free site provides, what can you do with that trust you've begun to develop with them?

    Another idea: If the membership site is well-received by your audience test turning it into a paid membership site. I would first try the simplest and most obvious monetization method before thinking about complex funnels.
