How do you prevent people from removing the footer links in free wordpress themes? (which often carry sponsor links) One way I can think of, is not adding links directly but a small piece of code that connects remotely to another server to download links to display - that way, depending on the page ranks of pages using the wordpress theme, the theme author can sell and rotate links. A great way to keep wordpress theme designers motivated to produce more high quality premium templates. Of course, there needs to be a motivation so that this piece of code is also not removed by the site owner, may be it is a good idea to offer a share of the revenues to the site owner ? What do warriors think about this idea? |

I used to use free themes but as far as the footer links, I never did enjoy them. I recall one theme I had where if you tried to remove the link in the footer which was linking to the author or one of his sites, you couldn't use the theme. Somehow it would make the theme not work so I guess if you wanted, you could find a way to add in some sort of functionality like that. The way you're talking about would be great for the theme owner but as far as for the theme user, would be a nuisance and I think you'd have many drop your theme/s because of it. Maybe if you could setup some sort of affiliate program with the people that want to use your theme, it could work out. |

I'd have a real problem with a theme that needed an external site to verify license. I hate to have a blog dependent on someone else's site.

I don't think you can, but you can track who's using your theme by setting a web-bug. More info about web-bug: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_bug |

I use only Premium paid themes that allow you to do anything you want with the footer. Honestly, so much bad code and even malicious code can be placed in free themes, I wouldn't want to use them.

There are way too many WordPress theme in the market that if you force a user to have some links on their website to your site, they could simply drop the plan of buying your theme and go with another one. Best way to gain backlinks is to continue designing excellent themes which will create you a LOT of backlinks from websites that review themes and not to mention that your own happy clients will also be happy to share a word about your theme with their readers!

Encrypting is a great idea, to connect it with the server, but still there are some ways. Sorry, but we guys are hiding the footer with the same bg color if it can't be edited:-)
