How to Monetize a Collectors Niche

Hi everybody, I know a niche that fits all the requisites: collectors/nerds, totally into it, money is involved, items are traded/sold all the time, items are highly coveted, rare, hard to get, number of collectors increases all the time, prices are rising, AND there is a real need for experts since 95+% of all items on the market are fake!

I was wondering: outside of trading actual material items, how to monetize this without ever touching actual items? I doubt that content marketing/adsense is the answer here.

I do know that forums are hot, and websites selling actual items have their forums which have 1000's of hits, replies, etc.
I know this niche is very promising, but what would y'all say are the best ways to monetize this online?

Like I said: preferably NOT buy buying and selling/directly trading items myself (customs can screw this up royally)

Example: say there's a good niche of Rolex collectors, how do you monetize that niche without buying and selling actual Rolex watches?!

Thanks a bunch,
Mark

Without studying the specific market, a couple of things come to mind.

    > Since values tend to shift, a paid service that updates values on various items could work.

    > Since there is such a problem with fakes, a guide or manual on how to determine authenticity might be a good seller.

Hi thanks: some good ideas! I had thought of the latter, maybe as an optin for emails, later on.. But right now I'm thinking: if I make a website on this... what will it be? I don;t believe in content marketing, not for this...forums though? they are popular...

    Hi,
well in your example, you have asked how would you monitize Rolex watches and the most straight forward way to do this would be to sign up as an Amazon Associate, I think they pay 5% on Rolex watches so you could make some great commission from that.

See if the collectors item is available on Amazon, and if it is you could do well with them..

Otherwise you could find a website of the collectors items and ask them if they would like you as an affiliate.

    Hope this helps.

Hi Ged, thanks! Not on Amazon, but on eBay! Affiliate... first I'd need to build a website around this subject, and the 1st question there is: what will that be? Content marketing doesn't work here I believe... but forums are hot? Also Facebook pages...

You could create a pricing guide or collectors guide that highlights all the hot items and where to find them. This could be sold or given away to build your list.

Also you could do a blog or ezine, build the audience, and sell advertising to the people that actually supply the items.

Keeping with your example, if you had a Rolex ezine with 50,000 subscribers you could easily sell solo ads to a Rolex retailer for a tidy profit.

OM thanks IMTycoon, this is getting closer. In the meantime, building an audience on a site/blog without content ,
marketing, per se..? How to go about that? I don't believe this niche lends itself to content marketing, also I don't like the concept: 'work your butt off for a few years, then MAYBE Google will give you enough traffic that MAYBE you can then convert. No thank you. There must be a better way..?

A few years ago, some friends and I went to Houston for the Super Bowl. We didn't have tickets, but were prepared to buy them from a scalper. Just as we were about to hand over our money, another guy walked buy yelling, "Black lights for sale." We asked him what they were for. He said the NFL put a mark on the tickets and the only way to see it is with a black light. No mark meant the tickets were fake. So, we handed over a twenty dollar bill in exchange for a three dollar flashlight. It was the best investment ever, because the tickets we were about to buy were fakes.

The point of this story is a guide to picking out fakes seems like it would be a hot seller in the niche you described.
