Buy before you promote?!?

Hey Warriors,

I was wondering, do you buy what you promote?
I am now looking for a new product to promote in the health niche and found what at first looks like a nice product, but should I buy it before promoting.

I must admit, until now I have not bought one product I promoted, but always made sure refunds where possible.

But since I am starting anew after my blogs got deleted (see http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...-fired-me.html ) I want to treat my business more serious. But will buying before promotion make it more serious or will it just cost me money?!

Thanks and Good Luck to all.

Naithan

Whether it's through review copies or buying the product, you're definitely better off using the product before reviewing it.

It enables you to give a unique review (the bad bits as well as the good bits) based on your personal experience.

    Which is way more powerful.

    Cheers,

    Martin.

If you are really serious about your business why would you promote something that you know little about? You could spend a couple of years developing a good reputation by promoting a series of products and then blow it all by promoting one awful product.

I assume that you expect to generate a good income from each product that you decide to promote. If so take the advice of an earlier poster and ask for a review copy. If one is not forthcoming ask yourself why. Do you really want to promote the product. If the answer is still yes then I would buy the product and if it is not worth buying get a refund.

    YES

You need a copy of the product you are promoting... I recently blogged about this:

Usually, when you send the product owner a nice email saying that you plan on promoting their product full force, they will usually give you a free copy to further write your review.

It has been my experience that people buy your "passion". I find it difficult to be passionate about something I have not used myself.

I dont think its possible all the time.

What if you are selling a guide for curing arthritis and you dont have arthritis yourself.
would you be able to use the guide? I dont think so.
You could ofcourse find what others are saying about the book.

what if you are selling hd tv's ? do you buy all the models you want to sell?

or maybe you are selling breast enhancement report and you are a guy.

I do agree that it helps you sell a little better if you have used it, but this is not true 100% of the time.

The best reviews come from people who have actually used the product before. Since the best way to sell is to recommend rather than just cram a product in someones face it would only make sense to recommend things you've used. In fact, my best affiliates are always the ones who takes my courses, use the information and then promote because they know what was great about the product and it makes it MUCH easier to convey that to members looking to join.

If it's in a info niche getting a review copy wouldn't hurt or simply buying it. This also helps preventing you from looking like an idiot if you are promoting something horrible and just don't know it.

As far as other niches like big screen TVs and such I could see how you would not want to buy 10, $5000 flat screens. But, if you can't get the product you should do a lot of research beforehand on it.

As a vendor I happily provide review copies to affiliates. Why the heck wouldn't I, right? If you can get a copy from the vendor, do it. If you can't then maybe that is a sign you shouldn't promote the product. If you wanted to promote HDTVs, for example, I agree you don't need to buy them all, but you'd not be telling people what a great TV it was. You'd simply be talking about features, facts, and pointing out what OTHER people say.

But you definitely should never lie and say something is great when you haven't done any homework.

I usually buy before I promote. I find it hard to review something without having experimented with it myself, unless it's something like Aweber. By doing that, I put myself in the customer's shoes, find where the pitfalls are, the benefits, study if it's easy to navigate, if it's clear, too vague, etc. Then I determine if my targeted audience would appreciate this or not.

    Thanks for the many replies.
Here I my final thoughts on this matter.

I will start asking for review copies, but purely for being sure that it ain't poop I am writing about. I don't need the product to write enthusiastic about it. All I did until now was do my market research, listen to some binaural tones, place my mind out of Naithan and into a satisfied customer and start writing. Worked so far. But as said I think it will be best to have a copy of the product to know it is decent.

@Jay You write nicely, but I just cannot stand your swearing.
