Product Can only be promoted...

When I am trying to get affiliate links for products I get this message:

This product can only be promoted as part of an offer.
How can you find out what the offer is ("part of an offer") that goes with the product that has this message?

If you find the original product do you need to set up all the offers (upsell/downsell) products to the original offer or is the funnel set up automatically with the upsells and downsells when you get approved for the original product?

Can you test it to see the funnel is working properly?

    I found that you will get a valid link to the front end of a product, but if that product has upsells, you will get the "This product can only be promoted as part of an offer" message for those additional products. In other words you can't promote the upsells directly, but you will get additional payments as part of the marketing funnel the vendor has set up. You only need to promote the front-end link.

    Please correct me, anyone, if I am wrong in my understanding here.
