Default WordPress.COM VS WordPress.ORG

I always thought there was only one type of WordPress, now I am really confused.

Is there really a difference between WordPress.com and WordPress.org?

I am just trying to pick the best blogs out there and stick with instead of later having to find out one is better than the other ones.

The difference between the .org and .com is that with the .com version you do not actually own the blog. They can and do take the sites down overnight. Also with .com you will have a domain wordpress.com/yourname
With the org version you own everything and you can do what you want with it.
Or you can always get it built for you at www.blog-designs.com

Wordpress.org is the home website of an open source content management system that you can use on your own website (either by downloading the Wordpress zip file on wordpress.org and install it manually or by using the Fantastico function provided by some web hosts).
Wordpress.com on the other hand is a publishing platform like blogger or squidoo where you have your own blog hosted by Wordpress.com and your blog's URL would be username.wordpress.com.

Hope this helps.

If you really want to build a blogging business I would only stick with wordpress.ORG blogs. There is a world of difference.

There is a big difference between what you can do with WordPress.org and .com sites.

This article compares the two (as well as Blogger):

So if I am following you guys,

WordPress.org is kind of like a WYSIWYG site builder and then you manually upload it from your computer to your hosting provider via FTP

WordPress.com is like a web2.0 social networking site?

From my experience, my wordpress sites have much better ranking when the software it hosted on your own domain, so go for the .org and host the the site yourself.

Recent reported experiences of quite a few people indicate that it is unwise to "outsource" a significant part of your business to a "free" service such as wordpress.com. So get some hosting and set up WordPress for yourself or pay someone to do it for you. You will not regret it in the longer term.

Golden Rule number 1

Never put valuable content of yours under the control of some other company such as wordpress.com etc.

Too many people have built up a LARGE website on wordpress.com only to have it removed for various reasons.

Definitely have smaller blogs and sites hosted elsewhere, but put your meat and potatoes on your own domain names and hosting accounts.

Do not use either of them, host your blog on your own hosting plan that way you are in control of your content. As mentioned above there can be some content come up missing on WP.com.

I would do this. It requires to to get a domain name and hosting but I think you are better off with having control over your work and not risk losing all your work because someone else decides to shut you down for whatever reason. I have hostgator with fantastico deluxe in my cpanel and I can install wordpress with one click. It is very easy.
