Monetizing an online videos site

I own a website with a high amount of traffic and a ton of video content. I need some suggestions for the best way to monetize.

The site is similar to NetFlix, in that each video is around 30 minutes in length and they are delivered with a custom flash player.

A competitor site is Putlocker - Watch Movies Online Free (please note however that all videos on my site are legal).

I have looked at various popup/popunder programs but these just seem so annoying and cliche'd to the user. Plus whenever I see these ads I close them immediately (almost out of habit). I can't imagine they get a very good CPM for these.

Given some (but not all) of the content is adult I am open to adult programs if they pay more (do they pay more????).

One idea I have considered is integrating a program into the custom flash player, such that a user has to watch a video ad before they can watch more (similar to the Youtube "Skip Ad"). I'd imagine I could get better CPM for this than simply popups (???)

As you can tell I'm a bit lost really on how to make money from this. My strength is in the technical area not the marketing. I guess that's why I'm here

    Willmoss,

Not knowing anything else except that you get good traffic for your video content, which you said is mostly adult content -- Here are some ideas:

Option 1 =>> Find an adult content provider that sells relevant products over the phone ...

Tell them that you'll drive calls to them in exchange for an XX% commission per sale or so ...

Tell them you'll use an adult affiliate network with a MOTO merchant processing platform, in order for payments to be split and released by a third party (the network) ...

You can use the adult content provider's toll free, national and local numbers (per country), or get these from tollfreeforwarding.com with a virtual PBX, and forward the calls to their sales team, so you'll also be able to capture some metrics and caller details for your marketing analytics ...

Option 2 =>> A pop-up message that's displayed at the end of the video (or after X seconds from the start of the video, it's up to you), which can effectively entice them to get a free scan so as to speed up their computers, optimize their Internet connection settings, fortify their Web browser privacy configurations, check and remove spyware / malware -- Free scan can be an opt-in download, it's up to you ...

Well, I'm just thinking that the computers of many users who regularly view adult content from a wide variety of sites could probably be riddled with malicious browser toolbars and other similar items, which could have already slowed down their computers, covertly adjusted their Web browser settings, compromised their security and privacy, etc. ...

Primary monetization would be an affiliate product with a free fully functional trial, packaged in an installer with recommended PPI (Pay Per Install) applications that offer supplemental benefits for your target users ...

Secondary monetization includes ad rental spaces and affiliate links of supplemental products / offers (or click to call banners like option 1) in your site and in your mailing list (from opt-in downloads) ...

    Hope this helps. Cheers!

Pop under advertisements with a company like Trafficvance might be your best bet.

I didn't have experience in promotion of exatcly video platforms so I can judge only as user. So should you do.
First thing you should think about - how to present the advertisement. You're definitely right about pop up windows. There's even a term - banner blind which means people don't really pay attention to such kinds of advertisement any more and close the windows automatically.
The advertisement in the beginning of the video? Great! What would be even better? Advertisement after a few minutes (in the first half of the video).

And you should also think about who is your target audience and find the products/services they can really be interested in. Adult programms really pay good, but is it relevant with your thematic? Because if you're showing cartoons, think about something else.

    Good luck!

I think for movies/mp3 website pay per download is one of the most popular method nowadays. What countries do your traffic coming from? If it's mostly US I think I can recommend you one fantastic CPA Network. I tested one of their offers and it gave me $50 from just 3 sales/leads.

If you're interested drop me a PM.
