Hi all,

Does anyone know the best way to turn a book into pdf without destroying it?
Are there any services that do that online?

  You could do this by ordering a gig on Fiverr.
  
  An easy way to do it yourself is to download OpenOfficeWriter (Free). It is a word processor like MSWord.
  
  Open your book file there (.doc I assume) and then chose the option to save it as a PDF.
  
  Works great. Simple and free.

If you wrote it, what word processor program are you using?

Your word processing program should have a 'print as pdf' or 'export as pdf' function. It's probably under the 'File' menu.

If you're talking about a physical book, you'll have to scan the pages as images and then turn them into a pdf.

I'd check your word processor first as mentioned above. MicrosoftWord has a slide out box when you hover over the "save as" selection, in the list there is a save as PDF choice.

You could use an OCR application, scan each page ... or perhaps search for the book online, see if it's already a pdf somewhere?

  I assume that you cannot open the binding of the book right?
  In that case I do not think there will be an easy way. You will need to scan each page manually... Using a handheld scanner might make your job easier tho.... Just my thought.

I use MS Word or Open Office. It is very easy. Just save the file as a PDF before closing. There will be an option.

There are huge number of on-liner tools are available for free to convert .doc to pdf.
If you are talking about physical book then scan its all the pages and make a PDF or just gave some one to type it and covert it to PDF.

Hmm why not trying those mobile phone app for scanning the thing? I used to scan my own books last time with mobile phone apps and it works pretty good. All you need to do is taking photo of each page, then adjusting small details, and the app will take care of the rest for you.
I recommend using JotNot or CamScanner. Of course I don't think that it'll produce high quality scan though, but it's good for non-fussy users and it's fast.
