I'm new, could use advice, sports betting blog

Hello everyone!
I've been lurking around for some time now but haven't registered until today!

I'd like to get some opinions and advice about this idea.
About a year ago I created a free blog(blogger) where I posted my betting tips(zero other content), did close to no advertising (I just mentioned it on 2 forums and kept a link in my signature). I was averaging about 100 views daily the first 1.5 months and half of that during 2 next months, then I stopped posting and views dropped eventually. The only problem is that I have no idea how much of it were unique views. I don't know if there numbers were good, but I was pretty happy considering I didn't do much to let people know about the blog.
What I know about the traffic is that 99% of it was targeted and huge majority(85%) were the same people coming back.

I have a similar idea now, but this time I'll try to monetize it and add more content than just betting tips. The most common thing would be membership/monthly subscription and that's something I'm interested in, though not as greedy rates as some go (50$ for one tip, seriously?). I'm still looking for other creative ways to monetize it, I already have few ideas too. I'm thinking about keeping it ad less so no AdSense or anything similar.

While I want to make money off this blog I also want to that people pay me for quality and because they trust me. My old blog was very one-sided, I got one comment under a post in 4 months, I'm hoping that more varied content and addition of social media will change that.

So what are the "problems"?

- I'm actually broke, my budget for this is 0, that's why I'm gonna use free blogging again, this time probably Wordpress instead of Blogger, I just heard it's better and more people seem to recommend it. I'm wondering if Wordpress is counting unique views on its own or do I have to do something to get this data? I'd appreciate if anyone told me if it's better to use Blogger or Wordpress in this case and why. If the blog will be doing well I'll eventually move it to a premium host and better domain at some time in the future but have to settle with this for the time being.

- No experience, this is actually the first time I'll be attempting to make money online this way, I don't even know if I'm ever gonna make a buck off this blog but I'm keeping positive I have a general idea about different areas of internet marketing but I still have much to learn. Would be great if you guys could let me know what should I focus on, my idea is to focus on education about social marketing and mailing lists, I'm reading everywhere that mailing list is a must and while I never had one I can see the potential and couldn't agree more.

I'm not sure how good is this idea and if I haven't revealed too much but I believe I can make it work for me so I'm not really scared to expose it a little bit

Sounds like you have something pretty cool.

If you have no money, and forum posting worked for you before then you should definitely go for that again.

Now it terms of boosting engagement you might want to

    -ask your readers questions,
    -and interact with them,
    -maybe make videos?

I'm not too similar with this niche so I can not get too specific

But you want to be building an email list from day one.

My Idea is that you do ALL of your "selling" and make your money from your list.

And you give the best possible content on your site, with no ads like you said.

That way all the traffic you get will be working for you, once they opt-in to your list.

and they will trust your recommendations you because you have amazing content on your site

Hope that works as some form of guideline

Oh and in terms of analytics you should get a software called

    Clicky analytics

It is much easier to use then google analytics and it will not count your own visits or spam traffic

I would strongly urge you to set up your own WP blog on your own domain name and hosting. You can get a dot com domain name for $1 at Godaddy (Google "godaddy promo codes") for the first year. You'll need a web hosting account which you can get for about $4/month. Then set up a free WordPress installation and a nice responsive WP theme (Google "free WP themes") and find one that you like that is "responsive."

You don't want your web site on a Blogger account or as a subdomain.

"I was averaging about 100 views daily the first 1.5 months" Much of this traffic that you spoke about was probably not human - more likely bot spam.

Be aware that there are some downsides to "betting" web sites. Gambling is still blacklisted by many hosts and other businesses.

Well, I don't have exact data on that do verify but you might be right, haven't thought it may be bots.

As for "betting", my blog will not include any sort of betting, I will only be providing the tips you can use on an actual gambling website, but you're right, some hosts do blacklist even sites like this, I've found one that allows them.

    No problem with being broke

You don't need capital to make money online

You pay in the form of TIME instead (In fact, your time is MORE EXPENSIVE than money - think about it!)

Create your blog but make sure you blog about stuff that people already demand

    How do you find out?

Simple-just go to competing blogs and check out what they blog about and pay attention to response patterns like social shares / comments

Write about similar topics but make your PERSONALITY shine out

Engage people on social media and keep sharing your content

I would use the 5: 1 rule at first - for every 1 post, devote 5 days of promotion.

Have you thought about using the betting companies themselves to monetize your site ?

I have a football (UK) betting tips site and at the end of each tip I have a referral link to the bookie that offers the best odds.

Also, if you're looking to set up a link exchange I'd be more than happy to do so.

Hello there, thanks for the offer, it is interesting and might benefit us both, but I have to set everything up first and will get back to you eventually!

    Hey again guys!
First of all, thank you all for great advices, I've read through them and will use it for my blog. For various reason I've had to delay the whole thing but during that time I've been collecting ideas and data and came up with pretty cool stuff on how to advertise it once it goes live.
Also I've listened to the advice of getting my own hosting and domain.
