Press Releases. What R They?

In our world of IM what are Press Releases and how can I make one?

I have tried to find the info by using the search button above but couldn't find a good answer. I know it must be somewhere, so please excuse me, because I know there must be more than a few threads like this lying around.

Can I make a Press Release for any site?

Any advice appreciated.

If you have a website that offers an original product or service, then you can issue a press release with no problem. I have had mixed results for PRs for affiliate sites though. Some PR services will let you get away with issuing a PR for the launch of a new affiliate website, some won't.
