Internet marketing strategy for a small touring company

I have a recent small touring company in the Azores islands and internet marketing is the main way I want to grow my business.

What would be a good strategy to start doing that?
What should I be focusing in to start growing my business?

Thanks.

What's your largest demographic of customers / other visitors to the Islands? Go where they are online.

What types of travellers come to the islands? Relaxing executives? Adventurous middle aged males? Post content that will resonate with them.

As someone who has never heard of the Azores islands, why would I want to go there? Sell it to me? What can I do there? If I loved city [x], Azores will blow my mind 10x because?

Ask guests and those on your tours if you can film some of the trips for content. Get them to post about your company and get some brand amplification and exposure with a #. I recently came back from Bali and planned most of my trip on the fly by Instagram hashtag searches.

    Get the idea?

Largest demographics is active middle-age people, but going where they are online without being a spammer is what I have no idea how to do.

Where do you *think* they are that means you can only spam them?

I'll try to help step you through this. I'm essentially middle-aged; tell me, what about the islands means I should come? What does your tour offer me?

          Thanks for helping!

The Azores islands have some of the most beautiful scenery and unspoiled nature you'll find anywhere in the world. It's a great destination for an active nature-friendly type of tourism.

I'm based on S. Miguel, the largest and by far the most visited island. My services include sightseeing tours to the island's highlights and hiking tours.

In the sightseeing tours, there's fierce competition of many similar small companies, so I try to differentiate by mixing in some great hidden spots in the itineraries.

The hiking tours are the best way to really immerse in the island's nature.

Thanks for the reply. OK, now let's dive deeper.

What type of scenery and nature will I see? You say I can immerse in the island's nature; what specifically can I do? What experiences, sights, activities "immerse" me?

Why is S. Miguel the most visited? Is it easy to get to? What else is there? Is it usually the place they go to for the duration of their holiday or is it a a quick stop-off as part of a trip to Portugal or somewhere else close?

What hidden spots & how many? Why are you the only one that goes there?

You'll see volcanic crater lakes, volcanic hotsprings, lot's of green pastures and cows, lush vegetation and beautiful shoreline. There's many activities and experiences you can do, but being a small business I only offer sightseeing and hiking tours. Larger companies also offer sea activities like whale watching, fishing or diving and land activities like cycling, quads, horse riding, etc.

      S. Miguel is the most visited because it's the most beautiful and populated island and better connected with mainland Europe.

Most people stay on this island for 3-7 days for the holiday and some visit other islands in a package.

What are your current efforts online like? What have you tried and what websites are you on so far? Can we take a look at your website?

How long do your tours go for? Can I enter any of the springs?

What ways is the island connected with Europe? What is the company that runs the connection?

Name 2 of each of your competitors: 2 of the large companies & 2 of the small operators too.

The people coming on packages, do you know the names of the companies organising that?

Until recently I was focusing on building a new responsive website and doing some onpage SEO.
          Website is: www.pureazorestours.com.

I offer mainly full-day tours that last about 8-9 hours.

There aren't many regular flights from European capitals, so many people come through Lisbon or charter flights.
Sata, the local airliner, is the main one, but only some months ago Ryanair and Easyjet started flying to the island, which is increasing tourism a lot and bringing a new profile of younger tourists.

I prefer not to name any competitor in particular, but you can find them all here:

I took a look at your site, and you have an excellent start.

You offer some gorgeous photos, but they take up most of the space above the fold. I would add some text to each photo describing what the photo is. Photos like that are also great fodder for posting on social sites like Facebook, Instagram, etc. Shoot really short teaser videos for someplace like Vine, with a link to more content.

Another thing, the descriptions are written in "travel brochurese", not language your tour guests would tend to use. You may want to spend some time just lurking in the forums, social groups, etc. soaking up the vocabulary your potential guests use. Talk to them using that vocabulary.

Last, I didn't notice any kind of email capture. You should be building a list that you can communicate with on an ongoing basis. This is a business where long pre-written sequences are not needed. A short, two or three message orientation, followed by broadcasts that tell stories about local events, history around some of the sights, etc. will keep people reading and dreaming about their tour with you. You can also repurpose those stories for a blog on (or linking to) your website.

The way you market where your prospects hang out is to serve them. You are their eyes on the ground, the guy with local knowledge and contacts. Be the authority while providing them with ways to contact you for more information. Gets a much better reaction than just bombarding them with ads.

Heck, you might even work up referral deals for activities you can't offer. For example, if I came to the island, I'd probably be in the market for one or more of your day tours, but i'd also want to go fishing, sailing, etc. If you had the connections with other vendors, you could make some extra money by connecting me with good vendors for those activities.

I hope this gives you some ideas.

My FB fans are all former clients and this type of business doesn't get too many repeat sales. How can I reach new customers who haven't liked me yet?

Yeah, it's the best I can do not being a native english speaker. I want to hire someone to review the english texts, but I still have more tours to add, so will do that in the end.

I have an sql database that retains form submission data.
However, only a tiny % of clients returns to travel in the Azores again. So I may be wrong, but I think in this type of business acquisition is a lot more important than communicating with former buyers.
Can you be a little more specific on how I can do this?

Then you need to get some FB fans that are not former customers. You need fans that are potential customers.

I agree. But since you are looking to increase the number of "former buyers", you need to communicate with potential buyers. In the US, people often take more time and care planning a vacation than they do major investments. Instead of worrying about people who have already been there and are unlikely to return, focus on finding the people who want to go there, but haven't been there yet.

Can you be a little more specific on how I can do this?
Add a blog to website? No one contacts me on social media or email asking for advice.

Do they know you can give them advice? If you want prospects to contact you, you have to invite them to do so.

Here's an example. Say you find a question on a forum or social site asking where they should go if they want to see volcanoes. Your island has volcanoes. You post back saying that your island has beautiful volcanoes and provide a link to a blog post with some of your photos. You also provide links to the volcano-related tours you offer, as well as a contact form for more information.

Another example. You mentioned that access to your island can be a bit tricky. You could do a blog post about the best way to get to your island, with links out to the airlines, etc. You add a soft call to action at the end offering links to your tour pages, letting people know some of the things you can offer. Very low key, non-spammy.

Thanks a lot for the valuable feedback.
I totally get this miguelsoares. One of my clients is a medium sized transport provider & repeat sales are pretty much never going to happen. But I tell you what does happen. People talking. Especially travellers. If you get into a conversation with someone about a place you've been on holiday, what do you start doing? Recommending things. Just like on this site there's people spouting off about what tactics you should try when they haven't tried them personally; the same goes for travel forums. If someone sees you amazing posts and gets captured by it you can bet that if they hear of someone going to the Islands, you'll get recommended.

What you might also be able to do is from your past clients, start creating custom Facebook audiences. If the price per click works out cheap enough, broadcasting to a similar audience as your past customers can be a way to get people talking about your tours & amplifying that word of mouth recommendation.

Lastly, like I said, I just completed a trip in Bali almost purely directed by Instagram.I asked bar/cafe owners what the surrounding towns were within say an hours drive, #hashtag Instagram searched those towns and picked which one I liked most. From the look of your island it isn't any larger. Wouldn't be surprised if the younger end of your market, after hearing about the island, does and Insta search & *if* your content does a good enough job of grabbing them (and you've got some great imagery btw), they will hop over from the mainland on a whim to check it out. As John said, if its a little tricky, a follow up post where you help them get over will help you wonders. Perhaps even set up a deal with the local ferry (or whatever it is) saying, can you promote their ferry in your social marketing and in return they offer some sort of discount to your readers?

I have an sql database that retains form submission data.
However, only a tiny % of clients returns to travel in the Azores again. So I may be wrong, but I think in this type of business acquisition is a lot more important than communicating with former buyers.
You are spot on the money. I've got first hand experience with this and there is no way you are going to convince a former customer to come back to the island, predominantly to take your tour again. Nor are there any real after-tour upsells you are going to be able to provide to maximise your profit. What you need to do is make sure EVERY customer you get is a walking-talking-singing-dancing advertisement for you and your tour.

Go out of your way to do EVERYTHING your competitors don't and give your customers as reason to rave about you. They may not be coming back; but they aren't going to shut up about you either. Get as many photos as you can on the tour (with your guests permission of course) and post them to your social media so other people can get a real feel what your tours are like on a continuing basis. Get you customers social handles if they have them and tag them, prompt them to join the conversation once they have completed your tour. Ask them to post their favourite bit in the comments.

One trick we employed for our client is, at the end of the tour say "now we've got one last thing to show/give you today; but first we ask our customers to fill out this card". Leave it at that. Nice and simple. On the card have *really* specific questions like "what did you enjoy most about your day?" & a small note saying that you can use the quotes etc in marketing.

Its great because you can get these made up really cheap and even print your own to mix up the questions every now and again. For example, once we did a batch of "please rate the attractions you saw today from 1 to 5 in order of preference". After we collected all the cards, not only did we have a load of data of what our customers prefer; we got a blog post - the Top 5 things to do whilst in X, rated by vistors - (readers don't need to know there were only 5 to choose from) and we tagged some of the customers in the posts. This went onto various social media sites, travel forums, and we sent it out to a few independent bloggers who were happy to take it as a guest post as it was unique, quality and based on real traveller data. The amount of exposure we gained for people looking to see X whilst in city Y was unbelievable. From a little card.

Anything I haven't addressed, John has already given you a great answer for.

I have to confess that I'm not that familiar with instagram.
So basically my goal here is to have good pictures and tags them with my location?

This is very much my goal.

At the end of the tour, I ask clients to like my FB page.
I give them a business card with my email and FB page.

I'm hoping they'll see my future posts and share them with friends who may be potential customers. I do try to post interesting non-pushy photos.
What else can I do on FB?

I also ask for reviews on Tripadvisor.
I have some great reviews there, but so does my competition and they have 10x more reviews.

Thanks for your great posts, I've already learned a lot in this discussion.

                    The main idea here is:

Cold traffic to warm traffic to hot traffic.

Start with your biggest moneymaker. Perhaps it's your deluxe package.

Interview customers who have purchased that major package in the past (if there are any).

Find out WHY they purchased. What was it that turned them on?

Then, interview random potential customers. People who you would like to have purchasing your products. These can even be friends and family.

What you are looking for is the mindset of these individuals when they are first presented with your offer. What is their initial reaction? What frame of mind are the end? What are their objections?

Make a list. Ask as many people as you can. The more information you have the better.

                    Now you have two mindsets:

                    Mindset 1: a prospective buyer/cold traffic

Mindset 2: someone who purchased your product

Put each of those mindsets on opposite ends of a single piece of paper.

Draw an arc from mindset 1 to mindset 2.

Your marketing "system" exists ONLY to push people from mindset 1 to mindset 2.

The way that your marketing "system" does this is by making tiny shifts in the mindset of your prospect.

There are plenty of tools out there that you can use to make these incremental mindset shifts:

-Blog posts that you run with Facebook ad traffic, and then re-target people with lead generation tools

                    -Repetitive radio commercials/TV commercials/newspaper ads

-Direct mail with repeat mailings to the right people

                    -Etc.

Whatever "tool" you use, the important thing here is to remember that you're trying to turn cold traffic into hot traffic through shifting people from mindset 1 to mindset 2 in incremental steps.

Where most businesses get it wrong is that they have no idea what they're mindset 1 and mindset 2 are.

They might guess if they do anything at all.

If you want to be truly successful, and keep your business filled to the brim with leads and sales, you need to know the mindset of your prospect and WHY someone purchased your product in the past. Without knowing this with 100% certainty, you're just guessing. Guessing becomes expensive and it's not very efficient.

The problem is, hardly anybody wants to ask random people what they think about things. It's scary. And that's why most businesses fail.

I'd sign up for google adwords and start using their keyword tool looking for the terms people are using in regard to your country. This does three things

    A) it tells you how to structure your content to what people are looking for
    B) It give you an idea of the terms you might be able to get traffic from google search (whether from natural search or their advertising)
    C) if you search for some of the terms and visit the top sites for those terms you will learn a whole bunch of ways that people are advertising and promoting your country and perhaps even your particular kind of business.

Anything pictorial does real well for tourist companies. I'd start with an insta page (local). Anything further than that, you're better off hiring a marketing professional and focusing in your business as marketing is just a huge world.

If I had a tours business there I would register AzoresHikingTours.com whilst it's still available. It's the perfect domain and you may well get some type in traffic as well as search traffic. You will rank first page of Google, Bing and Yahoo for that keyword phrase with very little effort.
