What do you mean by MLM "sites" that work?

There are MLM companies that work - some have been established for many decades and a small proportion of people have achieved enormous success with them. Of course (as with internet marketing and absolutely any other business model at all) there've been many more "failures" than "successes", and in the case of MLM those are sometimes the ones you hear about most. So much so that some ill-informed and/or prejudiced people have mistakenly assumed - in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary - that the entire MLM business model "doesn't work".

There are many scams pretending to be "MLM" that really aren't: they're just glorified cash gifting scams with fake and/or overpriced products and no genuine retail customers, or illegal in other ways. But there are also plenty of successful, bona-fide companies like "Forever Living Products" who've been trading for decades and have over 8 Million distributors worldwide including many millionaires.

Online MLM's do tend not to do nearly so well, though, it's true.

It is possible to profit from MLM if the company is set up right, in a way that does'nt fill the matrix up with lazy people who are waiting for a "free lunch".
If the product is good enough it can be very easy, especially if the product moves offline well. If the product is not that great, then you need to be an amazing salesperson.

This is the thing. You have to have products that people want to buy, that either aren't available at all in shops or are more expensive in shops.

For MLM to be legal, distributors earn money only on the sale of products.

If you have products that "real people" (i.e. not just business opportunity seekers) don't want to buy, you have a real problem. These days a legal problem as well as a financial one.

Sales to distributors (a) don't count towards the "70% rule" (now being pretty strictly enforced by US courts and regulators), and (b) will dry up when there's a recession and people are earning less than the cost of their "autoship" and cancel it: those aren't real customers. And companies depending on those sales are the ones going under, of course.

If you think about it, many things online are MLM. Although not always portrayed as it (due to negative stereotypes) they really are. Multi tiered affiliate programs, viral marketing, and more are MLM.

Just thought i would throw that in,

Yes, multi-tiered affiliate programs are a form of online MLM, very good point. And they tend not to have the legal and regulatory problems that other online MLM's have because in those there's usually no suggestion or pretence of anyone being paid for recruiting, only for product sales.

You do have to be careful when selecting any kind of biz opp, whether it is is mlm or not. You can get a complimentary copy of my report regarding legitimate mlm businesses at my blog on mlm best practices when you sign up for my newsletter. I have done mlm consulting for over twenty years and also do expert witness work in that area. Best wishes.
