How would you go about generating a bit of passive income?

Hi everyone, I'm completely new to this forum. Nice to meet you!

I'm currently studying a Physics major, and last Summer I got into IM, SEO and all that jazz. I also have a gaming-themed website (which might be one of the worst niches, but I enjoy writing for that).

Since I don't really have much time available right now, how would you guys go about making a MODERATE amount of money online? I'm not saying anything crazy, just a bit to help pay for my carreer while I study. With a bit of effort I could devote 2, maybe 3 hours a day to this project.

I'm not asking for niches or anything that specific, just a little pointer on where to start with.

I started it as a hobby, but no, it does not get any traffic.

      Yet.

Nobody said that passive income necessarily means set-and-forget. It simply means that the income comes gradually as opposed to coming instantly or upfront. The term doesn't necessarily dictate how much or how little one works.

Just ask the many Kindle authors on this forum who are still earning from that book they wrote over 2 years ago - some of them with hard work, and others with very little work.

OP: You are absolutely right; the gaming market can be a bit hard... but that's what makes it worthwhile if you have the drive, time, and persistence. For starters, I would personally depend on affiliates (Amazon, maybe?) rather than conventional AdSense ads. Keep them updated to the latest games, assuming your blog talks about all the latest.

Also, how do you feel about creating YouTube videos? Can you create top 5 or top 10 lists on everything gaming? Once your channel grows, the sky is the limit (you may also monetize those videos with conventional ads or simply a link back to your site).

Top 5 worst games of 2015
Top 5 reasons why (popular game) actually sucks
Top 5 forgotten video game franchises
Top reasons to bring (game) back

Gamers often eat these things up.

I disagree. The "real world" does indeed provide examples for passive income. There are book authors, inventors who licensed their idea to a corporation and people living off interest or dividends, for example. By the way, there are even book authors who DIED decades ago and their kids and grandchildren are still earning money. It's so passive you don't even have to be alive for it to work.

Whatever you do, stay on top of your studies!!! You'll make so much more as a Physicist and the World (and the USA) needs more Physicists.

There is NO SUCH thing as residual/passive income. It's a pipe dream that has no basis in reality...just like "free energy" or the 100mpg carburetor. I know that conehead and the others will foam at the mouth over this, but they don't know what they're talking about.

And ADSENSE? Are you kidding me? That's not a viable option at all...even for beer money. You'd have to be a celebrity YouTuber to make any decent money with Adsense, and even then, it's not livable. Hence, why all of them are begging on Patreon or monetizing themselves in other ways.

OP - provide services as a freelancer. Set up PayPal so you can accept money from clients and just offer a service to others at a reasonable rate. That's the best way that you're going to make money...especially as a student. (Writing, Tutoring, Researching, Editing, Videography, Photography, etc)

Exactly! But remember, boss: most of these people don't like living in the real world.

Why did you say (which might be one of the worst niches,...). I see the opposite cause it`s a big market over the world and if you know how to monetize your gaming website well and place ads from adsense or any other networks, as well getting traffic to this website. Sure you will see some money coming to you.

Go with ebay + Amazon arbitrage.

There's a great WSO on here I recommend
that goes into detail on how to do just
that and you can do it easily in the 2 -
    3hrs spare time you have a day...maybe
    less.

I've done it for a while and it works...
    and continues to work.

If you have a long-standing eBay account
you can take off running very fast. If
not it will take 3 - 4 months to build
enough trust so you can have higher
selling limits, but the time it takes
    is well worth the effort.

At least, that's what I would do.

Oh, and plus it's free (except the WSO
    of course).

Create a micro niche blog and monetize it with Adsense. Everyone thinks Adsense doesn't work anymore, but it does. Go into this with the long term idea of building an authority site in a micro niche. Long content posts with a little marketing can get you there faster then you realize. Don't worry to much about Google selling the ads for you. They will! Nothing is out of bounds.

        Honestly...

If I had your knowledge set (going to college for physics) I would get into information marketing selling SAT prep courses that focused on math.

You could build out a pretty awesome funnel.

        Something like:

Free YouTube videos teaching people math and physics.

Direct that traffic to an opt in page where they can get "cheat sheets".

From there you can sell individualized (by subject) courses on how to pass whatever test (SAT, AP tests etc.)

From there, upsell the monthly package relating to Facebook group access in a group coaching environment.

Then ultimately, sell one-on-one Skype tutoring sessions, but because you have such a long funnel you'll be a would charge premium prices for your tutoring.

Kaplan is a very big business and they make a TON of money doing this exact same thing. Except, I think they might replace one-on-one tutoring with their weekend seminar style prep courses. Or maybe they do both. It's been a while since I looked.

Otherwise, if you are in the video gaming, just follow the PewdiePew model. Record yourself being a goofball on YouTube playing video games. Become an advertising partner. Stay prolific. Make money.

You say that gambling is a bad niche. It's wrong. If you are looking for a niche in which it is easy to make money, you will never find ... because it does not exist!

Since you are interested in gambling and because you study physics, I would try to combine these two interests: for example, write something on "dice control" in craps or something about "visual prediction" in roulette. (Type these words in Google if you do not know what I mean).

Or try to find something specific about gambling. Something that interests you enough so you can talk about it convincingly.

Study a little SEO and try to get traffic to your site. Then you can monetize it through affiliate programs or through advertising programs.

Make a great website in a very specific niche and you may discover that you do a lot more than a moderate regular income monthly.

          All the best!

Yep, Jeff has some valid points. It is not quite as easy as it was 8 years ago. But this is still viable.

Kindle Publishing....You don't need any SEO, websites or any traffic....

I just ordered 30 more ebooks this morning and I can't wait to publish them!

This is the easiest and fastest way to make money that I know of, and i'm still waiting for someone to prove me wrong. This is the easiest way to build passive income and you can also build a list, a back-end etc.

I would suggest 2 things that you should really look into and see if it fits you:

    1. Traffic Monsoon, a revenue sharing PTC + Traffic Exchange company. With only less than 10 minutes a day work, you will get paid hourly for the next 24 hours.

    2. Project Breakthrough - A true step-by-step, most comprehensive video guided program that will show you how to make real money online in as soon as 14 days or less. It literally take you by hand to teach you all the basics to start making money online.

As salegurus states, there really isn't any real passive income methods. At the very least there is going to be some form of maintenance that is needs to be kept up with.

The only way your going to get true passive income from the internet that I can think of, is to invest as in a business as the money partner. You put up the cash and others do the work.

At the same time, there is no reason why you can't build a business that is highly driven by VA's and you just sit at the top of the pyramid and oversee things, greatly reducing the time needed to run the business. Granted this won't get you to zero work, but you can spend very little time for the money made.

  • You could read a couple of books on a topic you are really passionate about. For example "gaming".

Get really good content about the topic (download Google power search tool) & write an excellent report on the topic that you can give away on your gaming website in exchange for collecting your website visitors' email address(use listwire to automate this process for free for you). Then find vendor's online from click bank, rap bank, digiresults & other similar market places who offer you affiliate commission for promoting there digital products online. Make sure that they have email swipes for you to use on their affiliates pages as well as blog posts, articles and Facebook post & tweets.

Make sure these products are already selling like hot cakes that you intend to promote, by typing in "product name scam" into your YouTube search engine. Make sure you keep writing additional good free reports to give away as well to keep email list viewing you as good sauce of information on your topics of interest. Then copile your free reports into a book and list it for sale on amazon books (print & kindle formats ) Having a print book gets you viewed as a credible author on your topic of interest. Which in turn helps you make more affiliate sales without seeming pushy. Hope this helps you to start making some passive income online. It will take some initial work at first, but the rewards & experience from doing it will be residual in the end

Passive income? I guess you mean something you can put on the Internet, it stays there without you having to work too much and making you money. Well, for a newbie like you it would definitely involve some work befroe you're able to create something that would be making money on autopilot. If you want passive income you need to create something online first! In order to create something you need to work. Forget about doing almost nothing and earning money. That can be achieved but only after you work and create something that will be making you money. If you have money to invest then PPC + CPA offers is a good way. If you don't have money to invest then you can do something you're good at at Upwork.com. If you don't like providing service to others then you can create niche sites with Amazon links. Please note that this is easy to do but only if you know how to do it properly. Otherwise it takes time and energy. If you really want to skip the fluff and avoid snares along the way I suggest you find a person here who is already making money and pay him to show you exactly what he does to make money. You will jump 2 years ahead from where you're now instantly! I'm not saying this in order to suggest you should pay me!! But if you mange to find the person already making money online who is willing to show you how to do it - it will really save you from wandering cluelessly around! And it will allow you to make money the easy way!

  • Well I'm assuming you actually want to keep your website since enjoy writing for gaming. Well what I would do is start a membership site. Maybe charge $10 - $15 a month for specific gaming knowledge.

Then after you right your posts, use something like Buzz Bundle to get targeted traffic. You can so SEO too, but for gaming I wouldn't think there would be that many keywords.

You also could run Bing Ads directly to your blog, and monetized it that way. The main thing you want to be doing is building a list though.

You want to go in and build your list then sell your membership site to your list (along with affiliate products).

Yes Salesguru hit the nail right on the head.

    Passive income is an 'Illusion'.

Yes you can make residual income but there is nothing that will just bring you money day in and day out without you constantly giving it energy.

OP, why not keep building momentum on your Gambling site?

Creating your own website and sell your own product might be good solutions for you. If you start selling your product and recruit affiliates to send you leads you can have a pretty successful business that generates the passive income you're looking for. It's not easy and won't happen on a click of a button, but it's a sound strategy.
