Competiting for page one: How many baclinks would scare you off?

Just wondering, if you were trying to knock someone off the top spot, how many backlinks would it take for them to have, in order to put you off competing with them?

5000, 50000? 250000?

Just wondering really, as I have lots of keywords I am targeting and need to work out what would be reasonable in terms of competition.

Cheers!

No amount would put me off...

    seriously...

Carlocab.com had something like only 30k backlinks when he grabbed make money online top spot..... some of his competitors had WAY more and that's a damn competitive term...

Some of the health niche have hundreds of thousands of BL's and we managed to outcontent them for top spots

So I guess it's a fine line between onsite content and amount of backlinks? I have a 110 page website that struggles to rank highly for any speficic SEO term (although gets a lot of very long tail traff), but has only a handful of backlinks...

...SEO confuses the crap outta me. Is it backlinks we need more of, or is it just more content? Which comes first? Is there a leader?

You shouldn't be put off by a high number of backlinks. Relevance is also the key, as is really good content.

For example, I just recently launched my Neurolinker service. It has the term "Relevant backlinks" in the title and of course sprinkled throughout the page. ccording to Google I have exactly 15 links to my site, yahoo probably sees more than this. But it isn't that many. But these links are very relevant, and Neurolinker is on the first page of Google for the term "relevant backlinks".

So make good content and get relevant backlinks.
