Profitable Niche or Waste of Time?

I started a blog a couple of months ago and the niche is "motivational quotes". Traffic is gaining lots of momentum (currently at 7500+ page views per month). I also have a freebie for optins so my email list is growing.

According to my analytics, my biggest audience is US female, age 25-34 with interests in food, beauty, fashion and home decor.

Because I am a designer, I have set up an ecommerce shop via WooCommerce that sells digital prints of different "quote posters". However, I want to monetize the site in other ways - I tried Google Adsense which generated a bit of income but the ads that Google was showing were not at all relevant to my audience so the click-through rate was quite low.

I also tried Amazon and this wasn't successful.

I'm in the process of signing up with a couple of CPA networks so we'll see how that goes...

Other than Clickbank, are there any other ways I could monetize for this particular niche? Or is it a total waste?

With the amount of traffic that I'm getting already, surely there must be a way to make money somehow. The traffic is increasing every day the more I post so I don't really want to give up on this site....but I'm wondering if it is a "niche" at all?

Hey Chantal, you might want to see if Self Help / Self Development products will sell well to that audience.

People who are into motivational quotes may be more open to buying a product if they believe it can make them accomplish more in their lives.

Take a look around ClickBank's Self Help section, then browse under "Motivational/Transformational".

There are lots of products there you might consider promoting.

    Regards,
    Daniel

Motivational quote sites are not easy to monetize because they are usually not targeted. Now if your quotes are targeted, then you could sell in that niche. But if they are general motivational quotes, that is more difficult.

You also need to be careful with what you send your list. You cannot send them emails based on their demographics or whatever you think you can sell them. You can only send them emails related to what they opted in for.

You could try selling banner space based on your visitor demographics. You can become an affiliate for beauty, fashion, and health products. Look at commission junction, markethealth, linkshare or go direct.

If the motivational quotes are related to financial success, or fitness, or personal fulfillment or some other niche, then you could monetize based on that. But you didn't mention it being a niche site, so I'm assuming it is not focused.

There are also ad networks that pay based on CPM for number of visitors to your site, but pretty much any other method of monetization will bring in more money than that.

Use the google keyword planner to see the demand. Also check all the sites that are selling products related and try to find epc's for good products. Stick with the products that are selling. Thing with clickbank is you have to be careful. Gravity can be largely influenced with email list. Check the affiliate resource page for epc's. If you don't see any contact the vendor and ask. If they don't show you are you don't get a response move on and do not promote that product

To be succesfull, you have to first lose. After than, you gain experience and you discover what "not to do". We can find information everywhere which tells us "what to do", but nobody tells us how we can fail. As we fail we think we lost, but we gained experience and for the next time we have a better shot. The only thing we require is patience. Just after combining experience and patience is the time when we are successful

Have you ever tried selling a 365-day motivational quotes calendar to your viewers? 1 motivational quote per day for 365 days. Lulu .com can help you with this.

People come to your site for motivational quotes obviously.

Why not build your list thru personal development/transformation? Makes sense to me.

Forget adsense its cents on the dollar to what your customers could be worth. Your getting traffic, capitalise on it.

Focus on that list. Email development tips and articles and videos of yours. Then send affiliate offer that resonates with women of that age group.

Dont send them an offer all the time. Max.once a week. Provide value on those other days.

One list i once followed for quotes had the daily quote with an offer of the authors personal transformation course and an upsell of 1 on 1 coaching.

With 7500 a month. You should be building your list at a rate of 40~80 a day with a relevant optin.

Well done on the traffic.most cant achieve that. Cpa might be worth it but itl b tough as theyre just browsing for your site.

    Hello Chantal,

It is a difficult niche to monetize. However, self-help, self-belief, or spiritual products are best suited for your blog, raising the chances of conversion.

Just check out spiritual, self-belief, or self-help categories in Clickbank and select the products with high gravity.

This should work out and in case it doesn't just get back to me.

Indeed that's a very general topic, so Adsense will not work.

Like others have said, try to promote personal development products on Clickbank or books from Amazon from popular writers. Many of those who wrote popular quotes have also written books, so you can include a link to a book under the quote.

    For example:

"It doesn't matter where you are coming from. All that matters is where you are going." - Brian Tracy

Check out Brian Tracy's best-selling book on the topic of ... at this link.

And if you need more quotes, I have a few hundreds at the link below

You can also use motivational quotes to promote diet/weightloss products, exercise equipment, topical books, business opportunities, etc.

Getting the attention of prospects especially within such competitive markets using pithy quotes can be particularly effective.

You can also do some self branding via something like alibaba.

Motivational calendars is great, also mentioned above narrow down by niche.

      And regular planners/calendars, paper products.

You should try to monetize your traffic in many ways. Adsense, list building, you can put one banner of self development product on your blog. :-)

  • create a sales funnel & send that traffic down your sales funnel. The deaper your funnel goes the more targeted your niche becomes. eventually you will only need 100 people of your 7500 viewers per month to join your coaching programme of $400 to make $40, 000 per month. or 10people of the 7500 page viewers to join $4000 master mind programme.

Even if 50 people join your monthly subscription inner circle group of $37 per month, $1850 per month.

Honestly, while I think there are some potential ideas above, I kinda think what the OP should stick to what she's doing already. There are a gazillion sites out there already with motivational quotes. A big question to me is how you're going to differentiate yourself from the competition.

One way to do so is to do what you're already doing: sell high-quality quote-themed posters. And to my way of thinking trying to pitch people self-help products or -- god-forbid -- coaching is only going to detract from your competitive advantage. You need to stop thinking of yourself as being in the "Motivational Quotes" niche. That's not a niche at all -- it's just a very, large topic area. But a site that creates and sells high-quality decorative art around motivational quotes seems like a niche you can roll with.

Of course, you might eventually want to add other related products based on your artwork such as t-shirts, coffee mugs, etc. But trying to sell everything under the sun related to motivational quotes seems like the exact opposite way you want to go.

I do think, however, you need to have some realistic expectations about where you should be right now. Obviously, I have no idea how you much money you're making, but I'd be surprised if you're making more than a couple hundred bucks a month. So even if you perfected your monetization scheme perfect (as if that were actually even possible) and you somehow got 50% more revenue, that would amount to a lousy $100. Whoopdeedoo.

If it were me running your business, I'd spend the bulk of my efforts on two things: (1) product development (i.e., creating more and more quote posters) and (2) building traffic. To be blunt, 7500 pageviews per month is nothing to write home about -- and with strategic effort, I have no doubt you could get many times that number. Your type of business, for instance, to me seems to be a perfect match for social media.

Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest all love great visuals -- which you'd already be creating. Post your design, include a short paragraph with the bio of the person who you're quoting, put a link to your website so people can buy your poster and you'd start the slow -- but worthwhile road -- to building a following, and building up your targeted traffic.

Anyway, I know I'm going against the grain here. But I do think you need to think long and hard about what your core competency is and what you're competitive advantage is before trying to rush to monetize monetize monetize. Building a business is slow and while everyone wants to make oodles of cash from day one, often it's more strategic to focus on other aspects of your business today, so you can better monetize in the future.

      Good luck!

  • Thanks for all the feedback everyone!

Since I originally posted my question, my traffic has gone up to approximately 12,000 page views per month. My traffic is going up quite quickly (at least I think it's fast but I know some other marketers may not see it that way ).

I'm still unsure of how to monetize though....Adsense is growing but it's still only about $1-$1.50 per day. I still have my own shop on my site which consists of downloadable quote posters. I haven't sold any but I only have about 10 posters.

I am not interested in selling Clickbank products or offering any type of "coaching". A few weeks ago I tried selling some Amazon products but it didn't really work out. I don't think anything was selling because I just had a few "Recommended Products" at the end of my blog posts.

I was thinking of setting up a full-fledged Amazon store on my blog which would feature products with inspirational quotes (jewelry, coffee mugs, posters, etc...).

I feel like I'm at a crossroad - create my own digital quote posters and stock my own store OR build an Amazon store with quote products that are ready to ship....

      Chantal,

This is just my opinion - different from others that have responded.

The traffic you are getting is not buyer traffic. You are experiencing the same lack of sales that most other sites do in this type of niche. Quote sites, recipe sites, joke sites, funny video sites, and the like attract people that are not specifically looking to make a purchase. They are offering what is freely available online already.

The audience is not targeted, not in the buying mood right then, and you are hitting them cold with whatever you are going to offer for sale. None of these circumstances are conducive to pulling income out of these viewers.

Don't feel bad personally . . . but it is the reality for this type of niche market and you are not going to change that reality any time soon.

Sure, you can get lots of hits to your site because viewers will come to be entertained. But giving entertainment is not what is important when you're trying to make money online.

I think you are going to struggle (at least financially) if you try to monetize what you're doing with your site. Yes, you will make a few dollars here and there when people click away from your site (the advertising model). But if you're after full time income, you will be hard pressed to squeeze it from this market.

Personally, I think there are better and easier ways to make money online but you have to focus on money niches - markets where people come to spend their money. That is not the market audience you are appealing to right now.

      The best to you,

      Steve

For motivational quotes definitely look into promoting motivational books and courses. Amazon has an affiliate program that lets you promote products from them and get a percentage of the commission.

There are plenty of books on Amazon related to success, self development, motivation that you can look at. Also look into Tony Robbins, Tai Lopez, Dean Graziano, Brendon Burchard, etc.

These people are some of the biggest success and self development figures online. See if you can sign up as an affiliate for their products.

As Steve mentioned, the traffic that you're getting is not "buying traffic".

My feeling is that Adsense is perfect for this type of traffic, and in order to get targeted ads, your content has to be tweaked until Adsense starts showing the ads that you're expecting it to show. I bet your pages have thin content. That seems to always make Adsense show unrelated things, in my experience.

Since you're getting good traffic and building a list, focus your selling to those on your list and try to get Adsense to show the right content to your casual browsers.

Everyone have answered what to do - The end goal is, find something to sell and sell it.

Let me tell, how to do it. Now the problem is, we do not have a buying crowd. Why don't we convert them into buying traffic.

    1. Who search for the quotes (demographics from analytics). What is the probable reason they are searching for motivational quotes
    2. What might they need? What would they be interested in?

Example : 45F searching for "Motivational Quotes for Birthday" might be searching for the quotes to write in the birthday cake to her son. What will she be interested in? May be motivational books or inspirational books to help her son

    3. But she will not have any interest on the book, unless we show her why she should buy the book. We need to create the interest.

Write a post that will create interest. Write a post "7 inspirational books that will motivate your son on his birthday" or something, that would trigger her interest. She visits the page. NOW she is a prospect buyer.

    Now we can know

    1. How much of the crowd are interested in products
    2. How many of them are actually capable of buying
    3. Their interests

Now we can experiment with various products, and also we are increasing the pageviews and decreasing the bounce rate. Which will improve your search engine rankings too.. All the best.

I think motivational/self-help is a good niche, and is very closely related to internet marketing. These people are generally business owners or self-employed who want to make a real life for themselves. You just need to learn how to LINK the quotes and stories into cool products that are biz-opp related.

For example, I'll start out with a motivational quote and then weave it into money-making tips. Money-making tips are awesome. Then you can add your internet marketing affiliate product and get them all hooked on that juice.

Motivational Quote > Money-Making Tips > Internet Marketing Affiliate Product

My blog is very similar to this type of stuff so you can see how it's done on my end:
