How to make more money online as an animator

Hello Everyone,

I got started with the WF a few years back, but haven't posted until now. My name is Coleman Reyna, and I am an experienced animator who freelances online for a living. I am posted here to get some advice on how to make more money online.

Currently, I am using Upwork (formerly Odesk) but it seems like I am competing with animators living abroad, working for extremely low rates. Basically, I feel like there are better ways to make a sustainable income with my animation work online, so any advice or tips is well appreciated!

I have always thought that having an agent would be great. Someone who could find me jobs that pay well, and I could pay the agent rather than the Upwork service fee. Personally, I feel like my animation quality is at least good enough to earn more than the few 300 dollar gigs I am landing on Upwork.

Thanks in advance!

    Here are some tips:

    1. Make entertainment videos on YouTube. Be a YouTube Partner. Make money from Google Adsense.

    2. Create A LOT of animation courses on Udemy and another platforms. This method alone will make you a lot of money!

    3. Create A LOT of stock videos and sell it on VideoHive.net.

Those methods takes time. But if you consistent, you will make a killing! Trust me

While it is possible to make money from Adsense on YT, you will be far ahead economically to get viewers onto your own site and hopefully on your email list.

Decide how you could best profit from the viewers you want to attract and set up your site accordingly.

i.e. You could make a really cool intro or advertisement. Something that's unique and entertaining on it's own. Your CTA could be something like - "Want your own custom animation? CLICK HERE!"

I would think you could create a profitable niche for yourself.

    Hi, colemanreyna!
I'm not an animatir, and I suck at design and drawing, but it seems, I know how you can succeed.
I think, there are two ways for you.
The first one - you establish yourself as an authority, and charges more above an average on the market.
Buildying and promoting your brand - this is what you need (a blog, a youtube channel, a Facebook Fan Page).
    The second way is outsourcing.
I remember, I read a thread here a year ago about the guy who was making $100,000 on Upwork, He's a copywriter. What he does is he gets and outsources the job to other freelancers.

I clicked the link in your description, visited your website, and I know what your website lacks - you don't have a blog. Yes, you have "a story", "portfolio", "contacts", but I see no reasons to return to your website. And I'll forget about it within 5 minutes. But if you had a blog, chances are, you would become your subscriber, and maybe, I would hire you somewhere in future.

why not sell your services on Fiverr and get them with upsells.

so maybe charge $5 for 30 seconds worth of animation and up sell them with different yet related services..

obliviously, more time more money but also you can upsell them on adding logos or other animations that they need

FIVERR if not the place for you ( I made that mistake and would hate to see some else do the same)

I like the udemy idea ...

And you really need a blog

Have you thought about going niche specific? Like being a game animator? And thus making your own games and doing things that way.

A new freelancer has the challenge of making themselves look better than the rest. If you charge high prices you need to PROVE you are worth every penny compared to another person. There must be evidence all over the internet that has your name on it and is awesome!

Searching locally is also a good idea. What kind of businesses do you know in your area that could benefit from your services? Hunt them down and attack!

Stay positive because it is very hard in the beginning of a freelance career.
