New to marketing - need advice.

Hi Guys,

So I'm completely new to the marketing industry but wanting to start a career in it! I'm hoping to start college in September doing a degree in business and marketing.

I guess what I want to know is there any online courses for free that I could do before then?

Any advice that you could give to someone starting out?

Any forums on here that I could start to follow to help me learn the language and basics of marketing?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks for the help!!

    Hi, welcome and good luck!

I would suggest signing up to Lynda and looking at some courses on marketing. You can also use YouTube, but make sure they're fairly recent otherwise they might be outdated.

As for advice, don't give up. Don't see instant results? Keep at it and evaluate what you need to change. Build up your social profiles and presence.

You can use the search function to find all of the info you need. There is A LOT to read.

Yeah use the search box of this forum and ask away!
Go to places like clickbank, jvzoo, warriorplus and subscribe to some email list of the top sellers and see what they are doing.

Same with Youtube and google. All the information you need is free online.

The above posts are excellent advice - we're all going to tell you the same thing to start.

I gotta tell ya, you're already way ahead of most who want to make money online: you have the right attitude. Good show!

Another piece of advice you will get is to just jump in. You can learn more quickly if you can apply what you are learning.

For instance - start a blog about college students making money on line. You're getting yourself set up, people love journey blogs, and very successful marketers started in that very same way . Don't worry about making it look pretty, don't worry about layout, don't worry about traffic. You'll learn what to do as you go if you apply yourself to study every day. Even 15 minutes, if that's all you have, will teach you a lot.

Get stuck, hit the forum. Search first so that when you start an "I need help" thread, you've already done some research. Forum folk will warm up to you if you can demonstrate that you are willing to work, and Warrior is rife with money makers who have all started out like you.

One you have some solid research under your belt, have banged your head against the wall a few times, and are seeing the income, write your own book. You'll learn about creating your own product as you go, and the more the merrier. Great income producers.

Places to learn in addition to what you've been given:

      Matthew Woodward
      Pat Flynn
Seth Godin for examples of short, info-filled posts. The guy's a genius.

That's enough for now. It's easy to get overloaded.

Keep the attitude, be persistent through thick and thin, and before you know it, you'll be giving advice more than asking for it.

      - Annie

The best advice I can give you is that it takes money to make money online. Most people want to make money and choose the FREE marketing path. This is NOT the way to go.

Free marketing works it just takes a lot longer to see results.

It may take 3 months to see any income or traffic using a free method you will see almost instant results using the correct paid method.

Don't be afraid to spend money! No ones is telling you to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars though. Spend what you can invest little chunks at a time until you start to see a good Roi (Return on Investment) and then scale everything up.

There are a lot of free courses on udemy - these are also very basic, and some of these in the make money online thing are right out rip offs, but you can get an insight anyway

And there's really a lot of different ways to do online marketing, I'd look into the different paths first if I were you and decide on some that attract you. Blogging isn't for everyone, neither is list building or creating viral sites ... etc. I could go on

At alienating people and destroying businesses, for sure.

Any advice that you could give to someone starting out?
Be very skeptical. Believe only about 10% of what you hear. Go slow.

If you want free training on affiliate marketing, I highly recommend you check out Affilorama.com

Even if you don't get into affiliate marketing seriously, there are things you can learn from Affilorama that will help you with marketing online in general.

    Advice to someone starting out:

    - Don't buy into all the hype about getting rich quick. While some people do become successful online quickly, this is the exception and not the rule; most successful people experience failures along the way first.

    - You don't need to be good at a million and one things. One business model and one audience to serve is all you need to make a good income online. Focus on developing skills necessary for your business model of choice and learn as much as you can about your target market.

    - If you're feeling confused about all of this, take the time to learn the basics and foundation of marketing online. Traffic and conversions... research how to get better at those 2 things.

    Regards,
    Daniel
