Forum marketing...still?

Hey fellow warriors, I wanted to know if anybody on the forum still uses forum marketing for there niche. I know sometime ago it was hot but I don't here it talked about anymore. Any new experiences with how effective it is now?

It still works in most (if not all) niches but I suspect a lot of forums now get a lot less organic traffic from Google. (I might be wrong, this is from my observations of search results.)

With that being said, forum marketing still works as a networking tool, as a means to familiarize yourself with your target audience, and to generate a small but highly-targeted flow of leads.

The key thing is to always try adding value to the conversations taking place, and have a compelling signature.

    Regards,

I made $30k/year forum marketing on this very forum until I bailed out on the WSO/MMO scene last year. It's still EXTREMELY profitable if you have a skill/knowledge to offer.

I still get the urge to re-enter the market every now and again but the aggravation of dealing with unrealistic expectations just isn't worth it to me, especially given that I'm very well-paid at my "day job" and still make decent coin on the side with my own websites (amazon, hyperlocal, adsense, etc).

Maybe I'll re-enter for a bit to fund our Universal Studios vacation this year...

Thanks for your reply , I guess I have to test it. I want to try it with affiliate marketing.

Affiliate marketing will be difficult because most forums frown upon affiliate links. I've been successful because I have knowledge and products and services to offer.

Forum marketing still works But, like most marketing strategies, many people who did forum marketing dropped it and moved on to the "next big thing".

I still use it myself. It's not the fastest strategy, but it helps develop trust and rapport in the eyes of your potential customers.

I believe forum marketing certainly still works. The thing is forum marketing has been around for sooo long and as a result, there is always that slight tendency for people to feel like it's outdated especially when you have all the latest and greatest shiny objects that are thrown at us on a daily basis.

It's kind of how people say article marketing is dead or how some still question the effectiveness of blog commenting and email marketing. These "old school" methods have stood the test of time and it's easy for people to think they are no good anymore because of how simple they are.

I personally had been guilty of thinking this way. I somehow got lured into thinking that if the strategy wasn't complicated, then it wasn't as effective. After having chased my fair share of shiny objects, I'm back to working on some small projects by sticking to the basics and keeping things simple. One of several of those basic methods I'm using is forum marketing.

Forum marketing works! However, it would depend on how responsive the forum users are to what you are offering. The secret here is to focus on forums that are exactly on the same niche that you are marketing. I see in your signature that you are into forex... in that case, you would have a higher conversion rate when you join in forums related to forex trading.

It can and does work but it should be used as a Complimentary Source of business. In my opinion for the most part relying it solely is not prudent.

Heh, the person who posted that comment about the "next big thing" was being sarcastic (I think).

What he's saying is that some marketers jump from strategy to strategy, looking for the "next big thing" when they should be focusing on what's already proven to work... like forum marketing.

Forum marketing works for one reason: It is a community.
people get to know you because you involve in conversations every day. It is easy to build trust.
It means that you will have good performance with forum marketing if you don't solely promote your product but help instead and get people to follow your advices and buy products that you recommend!

"Forum marketing" has meant a few different things over the years.

Participating in a community, building a reputation and cultivating relationships still works. Especially if, like wolfmii, you have something besides an affiliate link to offer.

Spamming forums with affiliate links for direct sales never did work all that well. Forum owners and real community members hate it and will work to stamp it out. It's the biggest reason people whine about not being able to use sigs in forums on topics popular with IMers.

And spamming forums with links for SEO died with the Google menagerie, much like article marketing as in spewing keyword stuffed digital manure across as many worthless directories as possible.

The problem with forum marketing is that it's not fast. Many Internet marketers are lazy. They want results NOW. God forbid you actually work for something.

Spend a few months participating regularly on a forum in your niche and offer good info. Once you've proven yourself and established a reputation, you can market to them (assuming the forum TOS allows it).

It works but it must be done properly.

There's a million ways to market on the WarriorForum alone.

I track statistics on my signature links, and do pretty good. (Lots of tier 1 traffic).

I've also launched a ton of WSO's here... (I think over 10 lol).

So yeah, it depends on what your definition of "forum marketing" is...

But remember... Find a demographic that exists, and then sell them stuff.

Forum marketing is great (well, only the ones that allow you to promote your website in a signature. If a particular forum in your niche doesn't allow you to promote in your sig, then don't mess with it. Find another forum, or find another marketing strategy to replace it with.)

The traffic on WF isn't there any more. I've been watching the "online" numbers a lot and it's been a while since I've seen it over 10,000.

Yeah, I've noticed that over the last few days. Haven't seen the main forum over 2,000 at any time that I looked. That, coupled with the fact that everyone wants everything for $7, makes me wonder how viable this forum is anymore.

The fact that something like 70% of the traffic on this site is from India doesn't help either. Nothing against India in particular, but the differences in the economies is problematic when trying to sell anything even moderately priced.

True, the forum doesn't have as much traffic as it once did.

Part of me wonders... If this is due to less people launching on the WarriorForum and therefore leaving the forum itself bereft of the traffic. Back a few years ago, there were a lot more offers being launched, and the vendors and affiliates brought lots of email traffic to the forum.

These days, there are so many more places to launch. This has to have made a significant dent in the WF traffic.

        This is spot on.

Everyone is using self-hosted launches now.

Years ago WSO thread launches were HOT, with thousands of people being sent to the launch thread via email.

And Facebook wasn't as potent as it is now.

        Things move fast

Forum marketing is still good source to effectively connect with other fellow Internet marketers and build relationships.

However, it has no place for spamming your affiliate links.

Personally, I like Warrior Forum, Digital Point, and Nairaland the most.

Forum marketing is still an important technique but it is important only if you are using your website related forums. For example computer forums for computer related business website.

It is the best source to increase your knowledge power and also to connect with experience and professional people.

It still is quite powerful if you know how to use it. Practically you are entering specific niche community and with a little bit of creative thinking anyone can become your potential customer or follower. Building relationship with them is the thing you should consider the most and later they will not be able to just ignore, something will tick with them and they will be hungry to find out more.

I remember 9 years ago when I had my forum with over 10k members and how it functioned. Not much has changed in all these years except for Spammers(whatever you like to call them). Be the real member there and enjoy communicating with members and soon they will start following

    Give it a shot,

    Filip

I feel as if Forum marketing is still alive and well, though we just have to be aware of the territory, how it operates, whats going on and where it happening. That takes constant observation which for most folks takes alot of time... I mean I feel its more profitable than say "cold calling"

Most folks I speak with across these threads are outsourcing their forum marketing efforts because it does take so much time.

I personlly just recommend adding it to your daily routine..even if it is just ten minutes to comment here and there... there is always that "cumulative effort" thing about planting seeds on a consistent basis...

Forum marketing is still a great way to drive traffic to a squeeze page so you can build an email list and make sales...but don't expect to see instant results. It takes some time to build a reputation for yourself but once your seen as a leader in your niche forum marketing can be a great way to generate business.

Forum marketing works great when done correctly! I suggest that you join up with a few different forums about your niche as opposed to utilizing only 1….just gets you more eyeballs on your link!

I hope that helps and good luck!

The amount of traffic in a forum is insignificant. For example, I have found that derivative traffic can be a far more powerful marketing leverage than getting direct ttraffic from a sig file. Perhaps the same can be said for forums within virtually any other conceivable niche.

Many of the top marketers I know use top-rated forums and other high visibility outlets to publish content for their own prospects and subscribers. The internal communities are merely a relatively small part of the much wider marketing apparatus.
