I realize the theme here is doing it free, but sometimes paying a little is worth quite a lot.

Thanks for great OP!

Please could someone recomment a source/URL for getting a (free) website template that would fit nicely with Peter's IM model?

Great post Peter.

I've noticed alot of people on WF are looking to establish themselves online and start working towards making money with minimal investment. This is just the sort of thing they are looking for.

This process you have outlined brings into focus that, as long as you are prepared to dedicate a bit of time and effort to put your business together, there's no reason that 'average Joe' can't start to make money online.

Steve.

Wow - great post. I was unaware that the Google shopping results gave hints at what people were searching for. That tip alone may have me working for a few days....

Re: squidoo and other third party sites - they may not go down tomorrow, but terms of service can change abruptly. This might be a good method to test/hone with free sites and then once you have the right feel for doing your competitive research then move to self hosting for the center of the wheel. After a few experiments hopefully you'd have made some money to reinvest anyway.

Nice list.

You can also Get Keyword Ideas from Amazon bestsellers lsit, ebay pulse and Google Trends.

That's what I can think from the top of my head.

Great content here. For newbies, you can always start with Squidoo as a money site. When it has proven to be profitable, create your own WP site and change your links from your spokes to point to your money site. QED!

WordPress has been suggested as a basis for doing this type of thing. You can get a cheap hosting account with hostgator or similar with one-click WP installation. Then, you can create one blog posting for each money page. If you build it on WordPress then you have 100's of free templates to choose from. Just google 'wordpress template'. Is this what you were thinking of?

Not exactly Peter, but thanks for your reply anyway! I'm kind of used to, and familiar with, my Dreamweaver8 software, but do recognise what you say about WP.

I tickled about a bit with WP on my Hostgator cPanel fantastico several months ago, think I should get my head around it again; I'm printing Colleen's "Blog Inferno" as I type

Thanks for your OP

This is a very informative post that takes away any excuses for not getting started and making some money... but...

The only problem I have with making squidoo the money site is those freakin' in context Kontera links they're using to steal my traffic.

I've noticed a few other article directories are starting to use these and that's a jacked up way to treat authors.

Other than... Great post :-)

Thanks Peter for the sharing.

There is something I think I need to add in is the search for phrase match.

Using phrase match to search for your competitors is not the good way, where I would suggest using (allintitle:Your Keyword phrase) is much better.

Because Google uses the title tag of the web page as the most important search relevancy (besides inlinks).

Anyway the SEO people who does promote the product knows that the keyword must be in the title.

So use the allintitle to find out your true competitors.

Good point. Although I still think that both can be used. You may notice that the allintitle operator is in fact mentioned in the article:

I would appreciate remarks from experienced marketers as to the ideal number of competing pages.

Good post and a relevant method. I like the fact it's relatively modular - I can supplant my traffic method with yours and just use the niche detection method.

Thanks

It's really up to you. I suggest Squidoo because they encourage commercial activity whereas some sites will ban you for it. So you could use a squidoo lens as your money page, yes.

However, as many have pointed out on this thread:
1) You don't own the site
2) Squidoo has distractions that siphon off your traffic, so HubPages may be a viable alternative.

I like the info on Lemonarian but it's identical to (a copy from?) a book Michael Campbell wrote many years ago called 'Revenge Of The Mininet'. About the comment that this strategy 'doesn't work anymore": it worked years ago, it works now and will work as long as linking is the basis for search engine placement.

I have heard of that book before but did not realise it was at the origin of linkwheels. I think I'll check it out. Thanks for the tip.

As pointed out above, the method is very modular so you can take bits of it, and replace other bits with things of your own. I tend to use stars more than wheels, but I used the wheel in this example because it is known to give good results in promoting Web 2.0 sites and I wanted to keep the post as short as possible.

Yes, you can get lots of targetted traffic using social media to build links, if you keep at it. Once you make a bit of money doing this it is recommended to automate the link building as it is a never ending process.

Reading this thread is giving me some ideas. If I were to make an ebook out of the OP, would anyone here be interested in using it as a free giveaway bonus with their offers?

Hi Peter, thanks for sharing i'm going to take action using your info as a guideline.
I have a couple of questions..

1.In the keyword tool when researching your niche does the "Broad" "Phrase" "Exact Phrase" come into the equation?

2.When creating accounts from blogger, wordpress, squidoo e.t.c do you think you would get penalize from google if you use the same keyword in all, like the url string and link to the main site?

Thanks again

1. I think you are referring to the keyword tool in AdWords. In the OP I am referring to the free keyword research tool at adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal which only has one option, synonyms, which I leave checked.

2. Some say use identical anchor text, others say vary them. In the case of the link wheel they are few in number so there should not be a great risk.

Cheers,
Peter

Because this post has been so popular, I have made it into a free ebook. You can distribute it freely, use as free giveaway, whatever. It expands a little on the link building part, making heavy use of a free trial of my own product which I can't really do in the post.

You can download it at http://www.thelinkjuicer.com/7.steps....marketing.pdf
